I know I did and would never had thought about asking the bride (my niece) to pay.

since i have NO family here in kc we are always going out of town for some family function or other. we always pay our own way but before we go the "host" usually checks ahead on motel rooms (availability AND discounts). i think just about every time we've gone we were able to say at check-in that "we're here with so-and-so..." and a discount of some sort had been arranged. hth and enjoy the wedding ~ s 9|2|Checking for discounts is a kind thing to do.|Arizona|vbj48@cox.net|17:28:42|03/09/2011|

Yikes! That would be a terrible burden on the friend's niece to have to foot the bill for all of those people.
10|2|My friemdf just sent me a email and herd from her neice and the neice's mom is paying for the motel for all out of state guest. |STEVE|STEVBOLT@WMIS.NET|17:29:16|03/09/2011|

Its entirely your choice to attend so I think the polite thing to do is for the neice's family to arrange a discount of some sort at a hotel. Those who would like to attend and use that hotel, can receive a discount.

((This kinda-sorta applies, hmm, but just want to tell the story))

When I got married 16 years ago, I asked a friend to be my bridesmaid and she was from out of town. We paid for her dress, shoes and hair/makeup so it wouldn't be so expensive for her to come. She had the nerve to want us to pay for her plane ticket and hotel as well. We basicly split the cost with her already but felt taken advantage of when she asked for more. I felt like, if she can't afford it she should decline the offer, but not ask us to pay everything. She reluctantly accepted the offer but after the wedding we no longer were friends.
