30 0|0|I had a food allergy reaction last night!|hudge4|hudge95@yahoo.com|12:34:06|02/09/2011|
Posted on Feb-09-11 at 12:34 PM (Eastern) by 76.228.24.25

I know I already have intolarences to wheat and corn but I never had a reaction like this.

We went to Sizzler and I got salad bar, rice w/ beef tips in sauce and I had a bite of the cheese bread (even though I do have wheat intolerance, it normally just gives me headache or itchy skin). Anyway, the other stuff is not unusual for me. I had only taken about two bites of my meal and I suddenly could not swallow. My tongue felt thick in the back of my throat, head spinning like I was passing out. My heart pounded (which I thought was just because I was panicing from not being able to swallow). Once I got home, I saw my face was somewhat swollen.

I took two Benedryl and went home. In hindsight, I should have headed to ER but for some reason, my husband and I both thought it was some kind of spice that was bothering me. We didn't even think of anaphylactic shock until we got home. The Benedryl stopped it at least. I was so stupid!

I called the Doc this morning and am going in soon for checkup and advice. Frankly I am afraid to eat anything. SInce I feel like I didn't eat anything different than usual last night, I am worried about what caused the reaction.

Usually my food intolerances are just mild reations-headache, stomach ache, itchy. I usually can eat *a little* and not even have those symptoms. But whatever this was, was different, and caused a more serious reaction.

I once had a reaction from a miniscule amount of brazil nuts...throat not closing, but it was bad enough that I could imagine my throat swelling if I had had any more than I did.

I carry an epi pen for bee stings.

She's ordered a boat-load of blood tests for me. She suspected the sauce because usually sauces have sesame base (which I am allergic to sesame). She wanted the ingredient list so I had to go to Sizzler and ask for it. Turns out, it was not sesame base, but RED WINE! I am allergic to sulfates so that's what it was!

She told me that I must eliminate EVERY allergen I have or else the next time will be fatal. She said this reaction is a warning.

So, the next steps are blood tests for allergens, and then a trip to the Nutritionist to see what I can eat/use. Because of how widespread sesame, wheat and corn are used, there's not going to be very much I can eat.

In the mean time, for the next 2 days I must take 2 benedryl every 8 hours because the reaction WILL reoccur until all the sulfates have been purged from my body.

I am so sad that this will change my life so much. I have to be really careful. I'm afraid to eat anything.

You have to remember that your skin is an organ, so whatever you put on it, will get into your system as well.

As far as going out to eat, before you order , you can ask for an ingredient list of each item on the menu.

By law, all resturants have to give you an ingredient list, if you ask. If not, don`t eat there, go somewhere
else, that will. :)

I know it may be a pain to ask, but better safe than sorry. It is your right to know all the ingredients
that they use. Sorry to hear that you are allergic to soo many things. :(

I'm glad you were able to get right in and will be able to figure out what is safe for you to eat. Hang in there and keep yourself busy and hopefully distracted from worrying about it. I can imagine you've been though a lot of stress!

My best!
Vanessa 10|2|I eat gluten free if that's any help. A lot of what I eat is tapioca/potato based. Sometimes they use corn additives in, so you might end up baking your own bread. What I can suggest is that you search online for blogs for people who eat corn/wheat free because that's how you find good recipes when you're learning the ropes of your food allergies. I still am having problems swallowing and feel a lump sensation in my thoat. Dr said that when I had the reaction on Tuesday it may have messed up my adrenal or thyroid gland and its causing a panic situation. I have an appointment for monday morning, but if I still feel bad he said I can go into ER.

I hope I can make it through til monday.

You mentioned the Sulfates in wine. I have had two or three allergic reactions that appeared to be hives and swelling of my tongue... both when eating a salad dressing that was a italian style one. I'm wondering if they had a certain wine or something in them. Doesn't usually happen to me, just every now and then. What things have sulfates in them that this might happen? I know I'm allergic to a bunch of things... just have never gone to the doctor about them.

I hope you are feeling better!

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) and Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES)

Used in detergents and surfactants
Car Wash Soaps, garage floor cleaners, and engine degreasers.
Also used in , more widely major ingred in cosmetics, toothpaste, hair conditioners and about
90% of shampoos and products that foam. Also in body washes and body gels. :(

Damages the immune system, expecially within the skin. Most dangerous of all ingreds in personal care products.

Is also in most wines. But they do make NO SULFATE wines, just have to look for them.

I do not think any average resturant would have a dressing that would have any wine ingred. Would be way
too expensive for them. They use the cheapest possible dressings out there, which most have hydrogenated
oils. YUK

Main thing to do is READ THE INGREDIENT LABEL, to see what all is in the product.

You must be allergic to another ingred? You would have to narrow it down, when you eat certain foods.

Hope this info helps?

They also use sulfates in cut fruits & veggies to keep them looking fresh.
Also used to prevent discolouration in apricots, raisins and other dried fruits
Used to control "black spots" in freshly caught shrimp and other seafoods.
Used to prevent discolouration, bactrial growth and fermentation in wine.

Sulfates can provoke sever allergic reactions.

The FDA identified at least a dozen fatalities linked to sulfates.
All of the deaths occurred among asthmatics. If you have asthma, be sure to consider
whether your attacks might be related to sulfates. They destroy vitamin B1: small
amounts may cause asthma, anaphylactic shock, danerous for asthma, allergy sufferers, and
has caused deaths.

So looks like fresh is best if doing fruits.

What you are refering to are reactions and if that happens take 2 benedryl asap.

Vinegar has sulfates in it, balsalmic, etc. Definately if your tongue starts to swell, get to the ER. You could carry benedryl to be safe.

Sulfates can be WITHIN other ingredients, too. Vinegar, lemon and other juice (concentrated), baked goods, prepared foods.

So far I am finding out the you have to buy things organic (although not always guarenteed), and listed preservative free, but you have to check for hidden sulfates (such as in the vinegar).

They used to put sulfates on salad in salad bars but that has been discontinued since people died.

Now I knew I was sensitive to sulfates in wine and meds, but never had a problem with SLS or body care items. Or preservatives in food for that matter. Maybe wine is more concentrated? I don't know. But I am PETRIFIED to put anything at all in my mouth now.

I have to ask the Doc but I am wondering if I can go back to the way I was eating (once of course, this throat problem passes)
and just avoid wine and meds. Or am I now so sensitive that even a little causes a reaction.

Everything seems normal. Blood/exam. Going to allergy specialist and swallow test with ENT next few days.

She said she felt it was more of an irritation to the throat and me just having such a fright at the original reaction. She thinks it will resolve itself but it could be weeks or months. Will know more once other specialists look at me.

Gosh, I really hope thats all there is.
