Just curious what kind of heaters people have and how effective they've been during a power outage. Does what you have heat only one room or multiple rooms? If propane or kerosene, how long does a tank last?

Oh, that wonderful continuous warmth! :)
Just be careful if you're considering using any type of portable propane or kerosene heater indoors as they can be risky for carbon monoxide poisoning. :(

make sure the room is not to small that you use it in and don't fuel it in the house heeping it away from things too is important and don't ever use anything in it but kerosene it will not be cheap to run it tho if you are going to use it only incase of an outage then it will be ok They also stink real bad when you turn them off
We also have a fireplace that we used at first when we had the ice storm we just blocked off the entrance hall and closed the door to the family room When anyone needed to go outside like for wood they would go out the family room window lol so it wouldn't be to cold in the main part of the house Mom and I slept in the livingroom while Gary and Nick braved it out in the bedrooms Bill was lucky that he could go to his GF's as she did not lose power and Mike didn't either we did send the bird to Mikes as she never would have made it without heat 6|6|WHEN WE WERE STILL ON LONG ISLAND WE HAD OIL HEAT BUT 2 WOOD STOVES ALSO.......WAS GREAT|JOYHAPPYONE|DAIDOLA5@AOL.COM|11:42:35|02/01/2011|

I remember kerosene heaters used to be pretty stinky (and sometimes leave a black residue on things), but I figured those heaters have probably come a long way since I last had one 20 years ago.

I saw a 50k btu propane convection heater for only $100 online, but I don't know the pros and cons of either propane or gas....so I'm appreciating the input.

and love it. A local retail store refurbishes kerosene heaters, so we bought one used/cleaned with a warranty; that was a few years ago and we have been very careful (as teener said) in how we use the heater. We thought it would heat just one room but we have a pretty open floor plan so it actually heats our living room, dinning room and kitchen. My only issue is if it runs out of kerosene it stinks SO badly and again, when you turn it off as teener mentioned.

I always fill mine in our mudroom and carefully carry it to the living room; hubby will move it when it is lit and that makes me so mad, am sure that is a hazard. Any way, we have been getting kerosene for $3.50 ish per gallon but since we are only using it on the coldest days (we have a pellet stove for 24/7 use), we are not using that much kerosene. We store an extra 5 gallons in the detached garage in case of emergencies ... and my hubby sometimes takes the heater to the garage when his heater out there is not keeping him warm enough. 10|3|Hubby says that the 50k is a BIGGG heater and that it is about 1/2 the size of most house heaters Send me the link where you saw it he is home for lunch and maybe he can look at it|teener|teenerzacsneenee@yahoo.com|12:49:46|02/01/2011|

I thoughts on natural gas vs propane.

Propane is way more dangerous than natural gas.

Plus cost is more for the propane as well

~Judy in MI~ :) I LOVE MY CORN/WOOD PELLET STOVE , is a continuous heat, no drafts.
Corn will not burn without air, so the blower has to be running. So still need a generator if
the power goes out. But at least I can support the local farmer when I buy the corn. Corn
is much hotter heat than the wood pellets and alot less soot buildup on the glass, etc. Much
cleaner burn. And alot safer than a wood burner, and no more cutting, splitting, stacking, etc. 17|2|Judy....couple of questions in regards to the corn heater|BusterBrown|srfreezerqueen@hotmail.com|20:24:58|02/02/2011|

how much corn are you burning thru? Is this the reg whole kernel, or still on the cob>? Corn has gotten quite pricey here, but am following this thread as Dad is going to need a new heater of some type in the next year...brother installed propane, but one needs money for that...dad has always had a wood stove, but he is getting up there in age....Jodie 18|3|Hey Jodie :)|driller|harj@frontier.com|20:42:28|02/02/2011|

The corn is $6 for a 50 # bag, but is soo easy to just buy it and put in the stove. Not alot of
work involved like the wood. I keep it on the lowest setting and is more than warm enough.

Now on the warmer days, I use just use the pellets, but prefer the corn, as it is a much cleaner
way to go. The pellets are $4.20 for a 40 # bag.

The higher the setting "of course" the more corn / pellets you will burn.

The corn has to be a certain % dry. If too much water in it, it will not burn that well.
Oh, it is whole corn, which is shelled off the cob. They make all sizes and kinds. Plus have
add on features as well

The place I bought mine, once you pick the one you want, they take it outside, fill the hopper
all the way up and let it burn , to make sure it is working properly before they let you take
it home. Is very safe. I can walk right up to the stove and actually touch any part of the stove
and will not burn me. And it will automatically shut down, if there are any problems.
I have a wire basket with two candles on top of mine. :)

Only thing is , if you burn the corn only, you can not use the automatic igniter. All that is, is
when the house gets up to room temp, will automatically shut off , and then restart when you get
down to your setting. So , can only use that feature if you are using the wood pellets. Wood will
ignite but the corn will not. I do like the fact about the igniter add on, as it saves on the corn/
Wood pellets.

One bag will burn on low setting for one and a half days. :)

I am not sure if I answered all of your questions or not?

I was talking to dad before I got my burner, and I wanted just a wood stove, but he kept insisting NOT. He was worried
about the fire hazards. So to make a long story short, our company paid for my stove. :)

Get this though, him & mom burn wood. And "yes" I worry all the time about them doing so~ So many houses lately
have been burning due to wood stoves. I think your house insurance may go a little higher with the wood stove
as opposed to the corn/pellet one.

I do have a natual gas furnace, but so far haven`t had to use it now for the past 4 years. But at the beginning of
the cold season, I start it up , just to make sure it is working okay. Just in case I need it. :)

which is our main source of heat. I also cook all my meals on it too. I also have wood-pellet stove in our living-room which is used in the morning when wood-stove is almost out of heat. Also have wood-pellet stoves in 3 bedrooms that's rarely used. We had these installed when we moved in a year ago before even thinking of getting a wood cook-stove. We also have oil heat that's only used when we're away on vacation. Also installed a generator after people telling us of the power outages in the winters. Hubby & I cut our own wood on our property. Sharon, did you ever consider a whole house furnace that burns corn/and or pellets? The guy
I buy my corn from has one. You may want to consider just doing that and have just one
for the whole house, instead of the three that you have?

Just a thought to think about. They are pretty neat. He has his set up, so all he does
is have a container box outside and a shoot that feds the furance. All he has to do is
keep the container box full on the outside of the house. He has gone away on vacation
and didn`t have to worry too much about it running out~ :)

Next time I see him I will ask how long his set up will last without filling , if you want?
The fire pits are much bigger also, so alot less shutting down to clean. I like the fact
that once the blower is off, you can reach in an empty without burning yourself. :)

this unit is to heat the whole house, including free hot water, so can't go wrong. This unit can burn soft woods, cardboard, wood chips, wood pallets, etc. We also put solar panels on the roof. Hubby planned all of this when we moved into farmhouse built in 1900, as we want to gradually live off the grid. He wanted to have different heating sources as backup. Also, because of Cap & Trade which I hope is never passed would be devastating to all homeowners & small businesses. Thank you for your idea though, much appreciated:) 32|15|Well I am working on putting solar panels on the south side of|driller|harj@frontier.com|22:56:44|02/02/2011|

the house. But still haven`t gotten enough used windows yet. I would not consider
doing them on the roof, due to maintance. Just figure would be much easier to do
on the side of the house. There are also other options like putting on a fence, etc.

Of course it is not going to take that many windows for this small 24X24 house. :)
But at least I am not living over my head, means. I would love a bigger space, but
make due with what I have. Heek, I could probably heat this house with a candle , if
I was to try.

Already have the tin to put behind the windows, and the metal brake which dad built,
to make the framing.

You do have the right idea though. Trying to do the same , little by little here.
Whatever anyone can do to keep our money in the back yard, or for that matter in
our US, would work~

I definetly am having a bigger garden this year. I have already ran out of my
canned tomatoes, so having to use the frozen ones now. But at least they only
cost the price of the seeds, to freeze and have.
