Man i'm getting tired of carting loads of used cat litter to the dump.. You can't toss it in the yard or garden because it turns into a hard clay-like mess.. We have 3 cat litter boxes to fill and 3 indoor cats.. we buy the big containers at Costco. Are they any that you can actually toss in the garden or yard and it will dissolve or something? Thing is, I gotta use the clump kind cuz I can't afford to keep emptying the litter boxes every few days.. With the clump kind, I can just "fish" it out..

1|1|What ever you do don't toss any in your garden or any where near plants you like It isn't so much the litter|teener|teenerzacsneenee@yahoo.com|16:38:10|01/27/2011|

as to what the kitty puts into the litter lol DH did this at our old house around some roses and they didn't come back as nice as they were it was nasty If you have public sewer can't the "clumps' be flushed? We have 3 indoor cats and two box's we just bag it and put it in the garbage cans 2|2|We live in the country and|destiny|destinyroger@yahoo.com|16:48:19|01/27/2011|

so I don't dare flush anything like that down the toilet.. We have to be "careful" as it is out here. And when it's time to go to the dump, hubbie gets so darned mad having to cart all that but he loves the cats just as much as I do.

3|3|I use Feline Pine. I put just enough to cover the bottom of the box and scoop out poop (flush). The pellets dissolve into saw dust. That's biodegradable, but I just bag up and toss w/my regular trash.|Sara_s_Mom|IClipCoupons@gmail.com|16:55:51|01/27/2011|

But when we fostered kitties from the no kill shelter they provided what we needed for them and instead of regular litter they used rabbit food of all things. It can be bought at the Grange/coop for cheap in big 25-50 lb bags. They used it because the kittens sometimes try to eat some of the other kinds of litter products. It was nice to use because it smelled like alfalfa and masked odors and it was easy to scoop out piles. That would be something you could throw in a compost pile in the garden too, don't you think?

I had forgotten all about it until I saw your post, but now that my 2 cats are back to using a box all the time I may start buying it myself. It was handy stuff.

HTH. 6|1|Wow, I like that idea. I may just try that :) Thanks for the tip. But if I threw|driller|harj@frontier.com|19:37:25|01/27/2011|

it outside anywhere, I would have more rabbits & deer in my yard, than I already have now. :)

10|1|The other thing to maybe try is the "crystal" litter if it still exists|Abbicca|Abbicca@insightbb.com|20:34:12|01/27/2011|

My grandmother used it in her apartment years ago and it worked quite well. Dried out the poo and it was easy to fish them out, the urine soaked into the crystals and odors were minimal. The crystals had to be tossed after a little bit due to them having absorbed their fill. Two drawbacks to this:
1)the price....crystal litter is expensive
2) Not all cats will even be willing to use it as it is like small rocks instead of like sand

When cats get declawed owners are told to use paper litter. They actually make pellet paper litter that most cats will use and I've seen plenty of cats who will use plain newspaper strips in a litterbox. However those don't absorb as well and do little for odor control.

I think World's Best kitty litter is the corn husk stuff and it worked JUST like the crystals..... however it was just as expensive and my cats didn't like it. Either way, I don't know that I'd try tossing any urine soaked litter into a garden due to the ammonia content. Poo is probably OK...you'll just get stray cats using your garden as a litterbox though. 11|2|Good points to consider. THANKS :)|driller|harj@frontier.com|20:47:59|01/27/2011|

~Judy in MI~ 12|3|search the interenet for home made vat litter. I saw a recipe for it once that involved shredded paper and I think it was dish liquid. From hillbilly housewife or something like that, Never tried it though I should. The arm and hammer corn litter works well and is very light. I even used it with the littermaid boxes. Those also use less litter but don't dare use anything cheap in them. They gunk up. The worlds best was the worlds worst corn litter. They refused to use it.|wegogo|mike15461@gmail.com|11:59:51|01/28/2011|

14|1|I found the recipe for homemade cat litter..inside..|destiny|destinyroger@yahoo.com|12:12:25|01/28/2011|

Here's the recipe for homemade cat litter from www.treehugger.com

DIY Newspaper Cat Litter

1. Shred newspaper in a paper shredder and collect it in an unused litter box.

2. Soak the paper in warm water mixed with a few squirts gentle, biodegradable dish soap. The shredded paper takes on a cooked oatmeal consistency. The paper won’t come completely clean, but the water will turn grey.

3. Drain the water (an old colander works wonders) and repeat the soaking process minus the soap.

4. Sprinkle baking soda liberally on the wet paper. Knead it in to the mixture (you might want to wear gloves to avoid getting ink on your hands).

5. Squeeze the remaining moisture out until it’s as dry as you can get it.

6. Crumble over a screen and leave to dry for a few days.

7. Once it’s dry, put about an inch and a half to two inches of the paper crumbles in the litter box. Scoop solids daily and change it once a week. It takes about a half an hour to 45 minutes to make a 2-3 week supply of litter.

15|2|That's the one! Anyone going to try it? There are lots of make it at home things like laundry detergent on the internet too but I haven't gotten around to trying those yet either. All these things are supposed to be very safe and effective in addition to being easier on the earth. I am lucky I can make a sandwich so I gotta try to stick to saving money while trying to save the earth.!|wegogo|mike15461@gmail.com|14:59:35|01/28/2011|

It is recycled newspaper. Not really cheap though. I scoop the solid and change the entire pan when it get too wet, stinky, etc.

The reason I started using it is one of my cats had a small cut/scrap between the pads of its paws. It got sore and infected. After a shot and round of antibiotics it was fine but several time I saw the cat digging these small tiny chunks of clumped cat litter out of its sore paw. The cat if long haired and I think it got stuck because it was kind of wet from being sore. I decided that can't be good for him and found this litter. Really like. I don't recycle it but it is recycled when I buy it. 17|1|I'm going to try the homemade recipe|destiny|destinyroger@yahoo.com|14:24:13|01/29/2011|

I'm kind of busy right now but eventually i'll make up a batch of that recipe above and try it.. if I do, I'll lyk how it works.. :) I won't buy expensive stuff even if it's recyclable.. with as many cats as I have, I just don't have the finances.

18|2|I usually buy cat litter clumping coupons for free box/bag from ebay. They aren't as expensive that wya. You could a;ways get a bunch of $1 roasting pans and the cheap non clay stuff and dump them out every day or so and if they get creepy on the bottom throw them away. Kind of treat them as those premade disposable litter boxes. If you ever see the taller open dog litter boxes those are nice too. Huge and tall. Self scooping ones have me spoiled but they break. Thank goodness my better half can fix anything!|wegogo|mike15461@gmail.com|16:47:58|01/29/2011|
