We woke up this morning to find a charge for $29.95 for a company called BBU Services. This was a check that was presented electronically and the bank paid! A check that I did not authorize. It has my name and my bank account information, but not my address on the check, it was someone elses. A search on the internet showed a bunch of people that were hit at the same time from the same company! Check your accounts just in case. The sooner you notify the bank, the easier it's going to be. We closed our account and opened a new account. The bank's fraud department is investigating and they will credit our account back. But a lot of people online had overdraft fees, etc. because of it... so just a heads up! We are not taking the chance that someone comes back and cleans out our account!

Laurie

but we have no idea how they got my bank info. I don't have credit cards anymore, so I don't know where they got the information. Other people posting claim to have never used their bank info online and they have been hit. So they could have got if from anywhere. Paypal, Ebay, the bank, a bill we pay online... you just don't know!

3|3|Thanks for the heads up...I think I'll call my bank tomorrow just to make sure....I have cc's and Paypal, so you know never know!|saint6811|waylan@comcast.net|21:39:50|01/21/2011|

This is the same link I found this morning. The 877 number wasn't working anymore and you if you could get through, you certainly don't want to call these people and confirm the bank account with them so they know it's a good account anyway. So we ran to the bank this morning and change account numbers.

So of course the bank switched over my debit card and forgot to tell me it would take overnight to update. So I ran to lunch today and had my card declined! Thankfully I had a tooth fairy five in my wallet (I hide a $5 bill in there just in case the tooth fairy is in need).

I really didn't need this today, but it could have been worse I guess. I could have noticed on Saturday and then I would have had to worry unti Monday when the bank opened.

I just checked my acct. this morning & whew! All ok, but I will be keeping an eye on it just in case.

What I've NEVER liked w/paper checks is that they have a person's bank acct. & routing #'s on them, so anytime you write a check to pay a bill, make a purchase at a store or send a check in the mail for something just about anyone can get ahold of that info. And if you notice on the crt's from some stores, if you use a debit or cc, part of your card # is on the receipt. :(
I've approached my bank about this many times as I've always felt it's just plain risky in this day & age. I understand that for a check to go thru, the bank needs a number to verify the correct acct./person it belongs to but I don't feel that BOTH the acct. & routing #'s should be on the checks. I also don't feel it's necessary for some stores to be printing part of a person's debit or cc # on their crt's. Even part of the # is risky, so I always make darn sure that when I use my card, even just for a gas purchase, I get my receipt & take it home w/me, NEVER letting it go in the store's trash or tossing it in the trash as I leave.

Never bought anything from them and never had a problem again. After you pay the shipping for your item a box popped up and turned out to be the company that got me. I didn't accept either! Had to close and reopen and the bank waived the fee since I caught it online the morning of..... 12|2|I'll have to go look, because I might have ordered through |jdlaurie|savethosepennies@aol.com|23:25:35|01/22/2011|

That might be it, I'll have to see how I paid for my order... I think I used paypal.. which would mean this wasn't the one. 15|4|With pay pal there's a feature I used to use where they would give you a temporary mastercard or visa number to use for online shopping so you didn't have yours exposed and there's also green dot like cards instead of using your checking or real debit/credit card. All it takes is one of the many wireless computers it links to along the way intransmission to have a security breach and out goes your info! Normally credit card companies cover it all but banks can be iffy. Some of the greendot type card issuers also do rewards for every dollar spent too. Just search online which ones offer the best deals. You don't have to transfer from paypal or bank account and you can buy a card and reload it in person at the store. You can also have money direct deposited from anywhere you work or sell that deposits money to you bank account like amazon and alibris.|wegogo|mike15461@gmail.com|13:42:32|01/23/2011|

A few safer alternatives. Chances are this will only happen once or twice but there are ways they can get you without you knowing it. I don't give my own numbers for anything though the other night Mike signed up on q bids and gave his numbers and when I went into paypal to do shipping there was 60 bucks missing! In the print when you join and give numbers to them they sell you a bid package whether you know it or want it or not. I don't fall for that stuff because I read every detail of everything I get or do. I never give any numbers for anything like that and I do not trust anything that pops up after my numbers are given in a purchase because though the pop up does not ask you for numbers it came from someone who already has them and will share if you click accept even if its for something free that turns out not to be. More small print One other thing that makes me uncomfortable is when things ask for birthday including year. Supposedly for age verification for a sample or such but I bet with name address and zip and birthday can equal lots of problems if used.... Also I only gave one initial when I lived a,lone rather than letting anyone know whether I was male or female when ordering or buying something because filling out things or surveys that ask name who else lives with you etc just doesn't feel safe! Maybe I am paranoid but when you have been jumped in a back alley (fought my way out!) or had you bank account screwed with it can make you ultra sensitive to these luxuries we now have! Kind of like being rearended and always looking in the rear view mirror at a light..... Can't ever be too safe. We only live once and we work way to hard to lose life or what we do have in it!
