We eat alot of venison I always take the meat and put it in the crock pot for the majority of the day and then i take it out of the crock pot and shred it up and put it back in the pot with bbq sauce and cook for a little while longer

I am surprised your roast didnt turn out good. I do alot of roasts also. If you have meat grinder you can grind it and use it in the place of hamburger

When making a venison roast, I usually throw it in with bacon on top. This adds flavor to hide the gamey taste and also keeps the meat moist. Venison dries out easily. We usually take the backstraps and slice them into butterfly states - put in a flour/season salt mix and fry in a greased pan.

Hate venison, it tastes nasty & smells worse. Just my opinion. LOL

I always prep the night before and let the roast "marinate" in the fridge... then put it in the appliance in the morning and let it cook for 6 hours or so. The key is to add moisture before cooking; I have a few different ways I cook mine:

~~ One jar of spaghetti sauce (you can add a raw diced onion or green peppers)
~~ Two jars of gravy (you can add fresh mushrooms during the last hour of cooking)
~~ One bottle of fat free Italian dressing (you can add a bag of frozen mixed veggies the last 2 hours of cooking they get so zesty!)
~~ One bottle of bbq sauce (again, I add mine before cooking)
~~ One large can of condensed tomato soup (don't add water though) ... the finished product gets thick enough to use over mashed potatoes almost like stewed tomatoes
~~ One envelop of dry Lipton onion soup mix and maybe two cups of hot water (I mix it in a bowl to get it to dissolve before pouring over roast)

Or cube it and make a winter root veggie stew, along with a can of something like gravy or some tomato juice

Hope one of these ideas helps! My dad gives us an ice chest full of venison every year and I stretch my budget by making it once a week. The burger is VERY versatile, he just gave me 25 pounds in one pound packs which is a huge blessing at my house.

Take care! 11|7|To help with the gamey taste, let it soak in a cooler filled with ice water for at least 3 days, changing the ice and water out often, this will bleed it out a lot and get rid of that gamey taste.|jen_ron|jenayn@yahoo.com|16:16:23|01/14/2011|

This is the way my husband does it and you really cant tell it is deer meat. Our favorite way to cook the tenderloin is to slice it thinly, wrap it up with a slice a of bacon, hold it together with a toothpick and put it on the grill. Another version is to add jalepenos and/or cream cheese to it when your wrapping. Its excellent.

the first thing you have to do with any deer meat is tenderize it (unless it is burger - cant pound on that -tends to splat all over..LOL). put the roast in a plastic ziplock - end opened. pund with flat side of mallet. turn over several times. this breaks down the grain in the meat and makes it softer

put in crock pot on high with 2 cups water. cook 2 hours. add in 1 large onion, mushrooms, mushroom sauce or brown gravy (I get a portabello mushroom sauce from the store in a jar). cook 2 hours. add in veges and continue to cook on high . I put the roast in at 9 am and then it is ready for dinner at 6.

another thing I do with the chops is tenderize them first, then slice thin. put in crock pot with BBQ sauce, onions, cook all day long. they get really soft and tender.

good luck
