Here's my take on the Extreme Couponing show. It's hard for us to judge because much of this is familiar to us and we have all stockpiled. But for someone who has never heard of this type of shopping, it was a shocker. Most people would be turned off by it. Of course there are going to be a few new people who will love it and dive in hoping to score 2,000 boxes of free cereal. Overall, it will do harm because an important principle of our hobby is to fly under the radar. My guess is that this show will be aired via Tivo to grocery chain executives who will immediately put strict limits in place. I'm sorry, but if I were a store owner, that's what I'd do. It's bad for all of us, especially those who live in areas with unlimited double coupons. That will end. None of the people in this show were active refunders in the 1990's when there were 800+ new refunds a month. That died abruptly when executives realized that people abused the system. They realized it because of tv publicity from the likes of Ellen Biles and Coupon Connie Arvidson. We are in a Golden Age of Coupons right now, but the more people who 'show it off', in the extreme,in front of cameras, the sooner the brakes will be put on. It won't affect the number of coupons issued (thank goodness) but it will spur grocery store owners and managers to clamp down on people who walk in with a coupon file. This show didn't do anyone any favors. Three of the people featured have blogs or websites and I'm sure they did it to drive traffic. But that is a short-term gain that will ultimately work against us all. Smart shoppers fly under the radar. As to the people donating the items to charity, that means nothing to the grocery store. The store doesn't get a tax deduction for a charitable donation. Ultimately, the store doesn't care what you do with the items as long as you don't go into business selling the items in competition with them. You don't get any gold stars from the store because you donate it. It's still a loss to them one way or the other, if they doubled your coupons. Imagine for a moment that someone broke into your house and took all your cash, but they gave it to a homeless guy. Would it then be okay with you? I'm not saying the people in the show stole from the store, but they cost the store money, for every coupon that was doubled. Giving a big donation to charity is great, but don't expect that to influence how the store looks at couponers, especially extreme couponers. The store is a business, and if you are costing them money instead of making them money, they will figure out a way to slow you down. The people who agreed to be featured are either naive or publicity
hounds. I have no sympathy if they are now crying foul because of how they were portrayed. Couldn't they see that coming, with the word Extreme in the title? They played into the hands of the producers, so my guess is they are a little wiser this morning. Overall, 2 thumbs down to the whole thing. 1|1|Well said, she hit the nail right on the head. |flapper|joyphalen@yahoo.com|10:45:20|12/31/2010|

Garnette member 2|1|Two things I dont agree with at all: first, it wasnt necessary for the writer to name two individuals by name in her editorial as two people are not the cause of the 'end of the Golden Age'; and second, the example of someone robbing your house and giving the money to a homeless person is not apples to apples.....when we use coupons at the store to score a deal, the store is REIMBURSED for the coupon value plus 8cents per coupon for handling/processing.....her example leads one to think that couponers are stealing, so she is actually contributing to that falsehood.|saint6811|waylan@comcast.net|10:50:21|12/31/2010|

Coupon users are NOT robbing anyone of anything so I felt the comparison of such in the article was way off-base.
Companies WANT you to purchase their products & if anything, they've come to realize more people are going to use coupons in a tough economy, & it is why they're willing to reimburse the stores for more than the value of each coupon. And of course, most stores are happy to sell as much of their merchandise as possible, regularly offering sale specials of their own. So how is that a loss to anyone? I don't know how the show could be perceived as to turn most people off of using coupons & saving money. That makes no sense to me. I would think of anything, it would turn more people ON to using coupons.
And dredging up what happened DECADES ago to 2 people & specifically naming them in the article served no purpose as it's just continuing to beat a dead horse & only seems to affect the ones who can't get past it. I'm not condoning what those 2 did by any means, but they're really the only ones who suffered the consequences for it, not anyone/anything else.

I mean really.......... lets use Wal-Mart as an example. Sure, they put 100's of items on rollback (or so they claim) every month........ but have you ever paid attention to the other items prices? I have seen one item that I regularly buy fall by 50 cents and another that I regularly buy jump by 75 cents. Trust me, they are NOT losing money. I've not lived in a double coupon state in a long time so I don't recall what Kroger would do or the Publix in Savannah either. All I'm saying is that if 10 families arrive at the grocery store at the same exact time and buy the same exact products and only 2 families use coupons then WHO is profiting from the upgraded price of this item or that? Not the manufacturer because they sell the item to the grocery store at a flat rate, it's the grocery store. Yeah, they can hem and haw and say they are losing money but the fact of the matter is......... THEY ARE NOT.

5|1|that may be true in some areas. however in ours it seems that whenever something happens, they cut us back on coupons etc. And if they see this show they may do it again. We use to be able to use coupons, printed out coupons, free coupons, however now because some have misused them they don't take them anymore. And with them seeing this, here goes more coupons. We used to have $1.00 ones , no more. One store they told me that people were making phony coupons so that didn't help much neither. For me this show is only going to take away from us again. True she shouldn't have printed names, as we all knew what happened and who were involved. So names were needed.|flapper|joyphalen@yahoo.com|13:58:34|12/31/2010|

But for me, that show did nothing but will probably hurt us again in this area. Stores don't double. It's different then it use to be and now I'm sure it'll change again. And if you have 1 coupon for 1 item, that's all you can get. You can only use 1 per person, 1 shopping trip. But I have never seen anyone if my lifetime ever do any shopping like they did.
People here are just struggling shopping week to week. So they can't buy all the things that there are coupons for.

Store chains write of the double coupon portion from the advertising budget. This is similar to companies participating in upromise. Double coupons and even triple coupon wars between grocery chains started when I was just a kid, after they figured out how to price and handle the couponing strong chains used this as a marketing tool. Grocery chains along with manufacturers determine what coupons are distributed in your area. How do the coupons match the sale items all the time salkes are set weeks and months in advance. Who is in your area determines if a storer offers doubles. There are no double coupons in the capital region of New York because the only stores here are Price Chopper and Hannaford and they say they don't need doubles here because of the competition level. there are many stores like Aldi and save alot plus independants around but only these 2 large chains. Go 45 minutes away and you add Shoprite and pathmark plus A&P and some others to the mix and you get doubles. The coupons in this area are always low grade $1/2 or more go 100 miles south of me and they are _ off 1. If a customer says he will buy 10 cases of a certain product stores love that because they go back to there distributer or the manufacturer and ask for a dicount or pack allowance as they are ordering more volume is profit. The beer companies used to give us 1 case if we ordered ten for example. I personally think the biggest issue in our hobby is fraudulent internet coupons. As they better figure out better how to handle this more and more legitimate coupons have become available via the net. Remember that most so called reality shows are not real. They are embellished for ratings. I spent 14 years in the grocery industry thats part of my background and how I became a better coupon user.

have been able to do that. The stores will not accept internet cpns, BUT only from their websites. Besides they have a limit of 3 of the same items, unless you keep going back. I wouldn't be suprised if they started to tax us! You know the gov't & taxing. That would be terrible if they did that to our refunds. They get enough taxes. I had a cashier say that to me one time, that they need to start taxing cpn users, claiming we abuse the system. I asked her if she used cpns. she said she wouldn't be caught dead w/ them. I then changed the subject. One day she'll wake up!!

I meant that the money used to buy the item for the rebate is already taxed. You got the money from your job, welfare, ss, unemployment ect and the government has already taxed it (or will at the end of the year). Then you buy the product and send off for the rebate so they can't tax the money you get from the rebate because it was already taxed by the federal government. Sorry for the confusion! :)

It appears to me that stores that do double couponing have higher prices in general for many items. The reason I say this is a regional store here that doesn't double, but it does in say South Carolina... In Florida I can buy a item for $2.39 b1g1f, in South Carolina the price of the items is more like $2.89 b1g1f. So the person using a coupon might be getting a better deal, but there are a lot of people at that store who are not using coupons and paying more for that item and making up the difference.

It's the same week after week. The flier prices here are always much higher, when I go into the store the item is almost always cheaper than the stated price in the flier. This has been verified through people posting their deals as well.

I do see the point that many stores will limit the amounts someone can buy (most fliers say they can anyway) or they may limit the amount of coupons they will accept... but I don't think anyone should be going into the store to wipe them out of a item. If they want to limit me to 4 or 6 of a item each visit, fine. Buying 100's of an item just seems wrong to me. I realize some people donate these items... but really... spending 6 hours in the store trying to get hundreds of an item like I heard they did on that show does cost the store additional resources. It ties up a register during a long checkout and keeps one cashier busy and from helping other customers. By wiping a display out, you are also putting out all the other shoppers for that store. If they other customers continue to come in and can't find items that they are looking for on a regular basis that are on sale, the store will lose that customer.

I hate to say it, but I'm one of those people who can see both sides of a issue. I think staying under the radar is a good idea. I use my stock piling for personal use, helping under employed family and I donate some items to charity if I have too many. There are a lot of people in the town I'm in that buy stuff cheap only for the purpose of reselling it and it's those people who have made a bad name for couponers here in town. So it does affect us all. There are several stores I have personally stopped shopping at because of these people who clear the shelves -- the shampoo aisle is always empty and never refilled, there are never any deals left. The shelves are not only cleared during the sale, but for weeks afterwards, because they get rainchecks and continue to clear the shelves for weeks! I've been to a few garage sales where they open their garage and they have a mini store inside.... and there are all the deals I missed because of the cleared shelves! Frustrating!

I have even been treated like a criminal and had loss prevention follow me around when I have had only like 20 coupons total for all different kinds of items at a large chain store... because of someone else who ruined it for the rest us. They continued to print internet coupons over and over again. I have not shopped the deals at this store in at least 3 years because of this! They actually stopped my order and told me I couldn't use that many coupons and refused to ring me up. It was my first time using a large amount of coupons (if you call 20 a large amount) at that store and it was also my last time.

Another large chain store stopped accepting some coupons, because someone redeemed too many of them at that store and the manufacturer stopped paying the store. Someone actually used a coupon for every one that the store had. Apparently that throws up a red flag for the manufacturer and the manufacturer can refuse to pay according to the manager of that store.

I just wish people wouldn't be so greedy. Because it will ruin it for others.

15|2|I have never understood the point of clearing shelves. I will admit, I have bought upto 20 of something I had a really good coupon for, but not in ONE trip. I usually will get 3 or 4 items per shopping trip and get the 20 items over a few weeks.. |dlpavitt|dlpavitt@att.net|20:19:12|12/31/2010|

That doesn't make any sense at all. If they are following you it's because they think you are doing something suspicious not because someone else did in the past. They also may not be following you at all........ I've had loss prevention at a local store behind me because they were following the person in front of me. I have also had them follow me personally and I think it's because I am constantly going into my purse. I do not have a binder, I keep my coupons in a paper clipped stack inside my purse and use my phone as my calculator and place the coupons in an envie after I load the item into my cart. I adjust my coupons and utilize my calculator with each item I purchase and I'm not leaving my phone out for someone to take so into my purse it goes after every item is punched in. If you have a problem with them following you then ask for the manager.......... loss prevention is not supposed to "harass" you in any way nor make you feel as though you are shopping in a hostile environment. They are merely there to help the store deture shoplifters and thieves.

because of the head cashier or customer service person (not sure the title)... she called them. They were standing in the girls department pointing to me and talking about me and how I was trying to use my coupons, then when I went to walk to see the manager they kept following to see what was going on...but I was being watched... for coupons! Mind you... she never asked to actually see what coupons I was using. Apparently someone else was printing coupons online (multiples of them) and using them to get many items free. Mine were cut from the newspaper - which I believe is the only reason the manager finally accepted them after giving me alot of grief. They were for full size products and the products were on clearance.

I had to wait a LONG time to get a manager to come and talk to me, the loss prevention person was hanging around for what seemed like forever. I think they were hoping I would get fed up and leave. I almost did... but then I thought... hey, I'm not doing anything wrong... I'm going to stay here and talk to someone about it.

To this day I hate that feeling I had when I was treated like this.

in all of my reatil years I have never seen a store that has 250 box's of pasta on a shelf or 1100 box's of one cereal or all that deod wether they said it or not ( tho he did say it about the cereal ) thos items were pre arranged with the store Shelf space is limited and there is not enough room for that all to be on the shelf remember he rolled the cereal out on a flat cart and the deod was dumped from a packing tote
then on the subject of doubling I paid way less for my groceries in NJ at th estores who doubled and had triple coupon days then I do here I think the ads here stink and that there should be more of what is on sale in the flyer than there is now I could do a much better job with coupons if it was done that way 17|2|That is what I had thought too, T...that it is arranged with the store to get that many in one trip or even a couple trips to a single store....but I agree with Laurie, the shelf-clearers (those that DONT make arrangements for a large order with the store) just make it hard for anyone else to enjoy the deal, and it does affect return business for that store. |saint6811|waylan@comcast.net|22:11:00|12/31/2010|

in that area there was Topps & Wegmans plus Quality, Martins Aldi, and save a lot I remember when Bells and Apples closed Super Duper became Jubilee(still a couple of super dupers around) Shur fine was in the area for awhile. Big M was a brand of independants in the area.Of course Yellow Goose and Convenient Food Marts must still be around. There was a B-Kwik on main street in Buffalo.

major chain stores, Tops and Wegmans, we use to have supermarkets all over the place, they were smaller then the big Tops, but you had always gotten good prices as the competition was so great. Then Wegmans moved in and of course then Tops and out went Quality, Super Duper, A&P, Loblaws, just to name a few. You could use coupons without any problems. but then of course you had the greedy people who wanted more and then started making them and now the stores
don't even want the printable coupons. They will only take the newpaper coupons for free items, nothing printable. And now with only the 2 chains, why should they have to double coupons. There's no competition. And what I've been finding is that it seems what was cheaper last week is higher this week as there are coupons out for those items. It would have been cheaper to buy those certain things the week before without the coupon. Greed has changed a lot of things we took for granted. Just look at refunding. Just how many offers there use to be and for oh so many products. Again, greed.
There have been rumors at times that the stores would like to get away from coupons all together and just have sales. Hello! Don't know if that will ever happen. I get the coupon supplements almost every week, (sometimes there aren't any)and I could go through the whole thing and you know there isn't one thing in it that I even use. So that week there aren't any coupons to be used. And I'm not buying things that I don't need or even use just to use a coupon. That's not the way to save money. If I buy coupons and they don't amount to much I'm really not saving much at all.
In our city or small towns, it just isn't the same, stores are gone cost of food is too high. No raises in pensions, as
el presedenti says the cost of living hasn't gone up. He should come to Buffalo, we now pay $3.35 for a gallon of gas and there' talk of it going higher. Food is higher. Can't double coupons. So when it comes down to it Laurie and the posting of Nancy says it all, with the exception of naming names.

if i only had 20 coupons and they made a big deal out of it....id sure be talking to someone other than the cashier or

who ever was there that day............i totally agree.......those stores arent losing anything...if they were ..the would not offer doubles and triples......

i by far....dont buy hundreds and hundreds of items........i think thats plainly silly....but i see nothing wrong with getting what your family can use

when u can get it cheap or free........and if a cashier made a remark to me about taxing coupons....and she wouldnt be caught dead with them...ect,ect....

id tell her apparently she must be making some good money from her job if she can afford to give up a good deal..........

i think...alot of the people (NOT ALL) on government assistant are alot of the ones who wont use coupons...because they arent paying for the

stuff out of their pocket in the first place........a girl in line in front of me one day...had some stuff with coupons attached...and checker started to peel the coupon...so it could be used.......and the girl said...dont bother ...i dont use coupons.......then pulled her EBT card from her pocket and paid for the grocerys.......
the checker just looked at me and shook her head............

as for me...i will use any coupon.......i can get ...if its for the item i need.....

i have one manager......that if an item is gone .....and i have coupons that are expiring....he will let me go ahead and use my coupons and pay for the items...
and will order the amount i need and i can pick them up when the truck comes in....
he has done that several times to keep my coupons from expiring on me........

21|4|I did talk to a bunch of people when I had 20 coupons and was refused|jdlaurie|savethosepennies@aol.com|09:48:51|01/01/2011|

I spoke with the cashier, the customer service supervisor, loss prevention got involved, then I called the manager who finally let me use the coupons but still had problems with it (I made him look at the coupons to see they were legitimate coupons from the weekend paper, not even printed), the customer service clerk and the main office of this company.... and apparently the manager can do anything he wants.... the company offered me a couple of coupons to use on my next purchase and that was it.... saying the manager had every right to do what he did... so I told them to keep the coupons because it would be too much of a hassle using them at the store and they had lost my business.

take the coupons when she was on Wic either. I don't understand why they wouldn't, but they did the same with food stamps here for my sister.

I don't know why they discourage using them for the people who need coupons the most. If they are allowed to buy these items they should be allowed to save on them as well to stretch their budget.

we don't tell any one i can be nice-- ruins the image. 35|1|Steve, I remember that situation 15 yrs ago. They wanted to pull all coupons out of our area. But people got up in arms and they decided to keep them. But like I mentioned they don't want to take printed out ones and try to double, they'll only do it when they have signs on the store windows saying they are doubling. But that's maybe once a yr if we're lucky. But there is talk again about them trying to eliminate coupons. So we'll see. |flapper|joyphalen@yahoo.com|14:08:57|01/01/2011|

if the store does not know how to do, then won`t work~ Depends on who programs their registers and
how well the are educated/trained~

You will not be able to do if you have all food items, and coupons that make your order zero, so just
have to make sure you purchase one or two items that are taxable to show a total of a few dollars.

Another words, if you try to use all coupons on all food items, when said an done, if your are getting
all products that are free or almost free, in the end , they will/can not give you money back. That is
why some will not do the order with coupons, unless you make sure you have a total when all finished.

Heek some store here will not take bud cards , due to the fact they do not know how to process when
using them. Big Lots is one store , which also they do not know how to do even the Walmart gift cards.

It all boils down to how well they are trained, and if they want your repeat business. At least that
is the way I look at it.

Hope this info helps.

~Judy in MI~ :) 40|3|There's a store here where if you use co's on your order and pay with an eba card the coupons don't come off the food, they come off your non-food item total.|pussecat|pu55ecat@aol.com|17:03:13|01/01/2011|

I only watched one show and I was bothered by what I saw. First of all, one lady was SO darned stressed out at the check out because she had SO many coupons, the register shut down.. Why didn't she break her purchases up into smaller trips? Why do such a big purchase at once??

What bothered me was that I didn't hear about many of these extreme couponers sharing their hoard. I mean, say, you figure you're going to live to be around 85 or 90 years old.. WHY keep 150 years worth of toilet paper? Why not share it with a local shelter or food bank? And I'm wondering how much of all that stuff is going to expire before it's even used?

I went to CVS this weekend and bought 40 rolls of paper towels that after savings, came out to be around .23 a roll.. It's been a LONG time since i've stocked piled anything but we use A LOT of paper towels around here.. I felt comfortable stacking those paper towels.. but if I felt I wouldn't be able to use them all in my life time, i'd certainly share the rest..
