Try checking into that first.... Cheaper and more cooperative if they are already at a dr! Happens to us younger ones too say in their 40's and 50's! I can't hear so great anymore and he keeps telling me to go. tell she has it. Luckily Medicaid paid for it as there is no way I could afford it for her. Anyhoo..she always shows it to people who have hearing problems to show them they do NOT have to have the old big clunky types any longer.
Hers is soo little and just a little 'fishline'goes from inner ear to behind her ear to connect to the piece behind the ear. The behind the ear piece also is very small and comes in a bunch of different colors...even hot pink if you like! lol!
Here is a page with pics most similar to hers. You do NOT see the piece in the ear canal and the 'string' is almost invisible. People are truly amazed when they see it..rather DON'T see it!..till she takes it out and shows them.

Whenever I go over to my sister's house (she's the only one of us who did NOT inherit our genetic hearing loss), I have to turn my hearing aids way down & STILL my nerves are just about shot by the time I leave cuz their tv is always up so dang loud. Ugh! I turn my hearing aids down to tune out the tv but then I have a dickens of a time hearing my sister talk. ;-p Double-edged sword.
I don't get it cuz her hearing is SO good that I swear she can hear a mouse take a dump in the corner. So, why in heck do they need the volume on the tv up so loud?! LOL
Maybe you can try & gently talk to your mom about getting hearing aids? Maybe mentioning your concerns that she's missing out on music, little kids' cheerful giggles, jokes, birds chirping, & you're concerned that she may also be missing out on some of the things the dr. says, conversations w/friends, etc. & warning sounds like a car/truck approaching as she's about to cross a street or the siren of an approaching ambulance or squad car that might be coming up behind her as she's driving.
I know some can be kind of sensitive about things like that but you're so good at smoothing things over, & you know your mom best! :)
Granted, there are some things she may not want to hear w/hearing aids but that's where the volume control on the hearing aids come in very handy! LOLOL
ETA: Something to keep in mind is that a hearing aid in EACH ear works much better than just 1 hearing aid for the person wearing them. I think because it "equalizes" or balances out the sounds better, & you get a better sense of "direction" as far as where sounds are coming from. And I've noticed w/myself that having a hearing aid in each ear also seems to help reduce the "background" noises some, altho those Dot Matrix printers still drive me nuts. LOL

Maybe this will help.
A lot of shows, especially movies, tend to whisper at the most crucial parts of a story plot.
I use my Closed Caption (cc) option on the TV remote control to show the words on the screen.
Some of the PBS shows are hard to follow if you can't see what they are saying along with the Britsh speech patterns.

What kind is it?
I love watching shows like Primetime Live, 20/20, etc. but it drives me crazy how the background music they play just about drowns out the people talking. Grrr! I can read lips quite well but if I can't see the faces of the people talking, it's very frustrating. I've always wanted to call Primetime Live, etc. & tell them to turn down that dang background music or turn up the volume on the people talking.

I wasn't aware tv's came w/that kind of an option cuz I just always thought it was only the tv stations that could control the volume output of the speach & background sound for the shows, or just how the shows were made. Nice if we, the consumers, can have the option to control it ourselves.

But, I understand that is going to change as the FCC has received enough complaints over the years about the blasting commercials that it has finally enacted a new regulation that says the commercial companies have to tone it down. :) I can't remember when it goes into effect but it won't be soon enough for me!
