my power bill doubled i have no idea how we are going to survive we may have to go back to coal and wood burners im really serious i have never had a bill this high and i have no idea how to handle it ...thank God it was after Christmas I hate the electric company

You might want to check the meter to make sure it hasn't gone haywire (old meters are known for malfunctioning & running up the kilowatts) or that there isn't something "spiking" the elect. causing you to use more than you should be.
Could the dryer have been used more than usual in the past month?
I found out that one of my older computers was actually "spiking" my elect. When the computer was on, the disk in my meter would be turning normally for periods of time but then would zip around like I was supplying elect. to the sun! LOL Needless to say, that computer was out the door shortly afterwards.
But all it takes is a short in wiring somewhere to do it too so having your fuse box, furnace &/or hot water heater checked (if the hot water heater is elect.) periodically isn't a bad idea either. Checking the fridge & freezer to make sure someone hasn't bumped the temp controls is also a good idea.

My bill is high, but only due to my fridge drawing way too many amps. Can`t afford a new
one right now.
So you may want to check all of your appliances to see if they are checking out okay. You
can get a amp reader that actually plugs into the wall first, and then you plug your
appliance into it. Will do the reading and lyk, if there is something wrong. Is " I think"
around $30 Will only read 115 volts NOT 230 volts.
Or just do process of elimination~ I had to do this and that is how I found out about
the fridge. Also opened up the circuit breaker box, and went down each row of circuit
breakers, and did a check to make sure nothing went to ground. Wouldn`t you know it, I
did find two that went to ground. Double checked, then just shut off the circuit breakers
for now, til I can have time to decide how I am going to fix~ :(
Possiblities for high electric >>
sump pump burnt out, water pump (if you have your own well) & PSI water tank could be water logged,
which means it doesn`t have enough air in it, so is clicking on & off.
It takes more electric for an item to come on, than it does to actually run.
Freezer running too much, fridge running too much, or just a wire gone to ground, will also
run a electric bill up. Usually when this happens, it could mean one of many things, such
as mouse chewed thru wire and is touching a ground wire or other wire HOT , spider touching
two wires, causing the ground, etc. So many posssiblities. Or hot water tank one element
not working~

my lift pump for the septic. It burnt out, and didn`t know it, til I got the bill which
was twice as much as usual. But figured it out, when I checked it. Sure enough , got a
new sump pump, and fixed the high bill. :)

I had even paid a bit extra last month---knowing December's bill starts to go nuts. Even WITH the extra I paid it is more than I expected!! Granted the billing period was for 35 days(versus 29 or 30 last year) and the temps have been much colder this year (at least 6 degrees average colder).
But we're sure noticing the rate hike here. I forgot how much they said it was going to go up "on average" but I didn't expect a 100% jump even with weather against us!!! OUCH. And the sad thing is that December isn't usually my highest bill month. I think I'll need to wear protective gear to go out to my mailbox next month as the bill might be snapping at my fingers going for blood!!!
