25 0|0|HELP! My dog has GAS BAD!!!|destiny|destinyroger@yahoo.com|11:29:20|12/13/2010|
Posted on Dec-13-10 at 11:29 AM (Eastern) by 69.171.160.153

I have an old dog who is on medication for her cronic cough. Thing is, ever since she's been on this medication, she has gas every day SO bad, it just seeps from her rear and we all probably know dog gas is one of the most putrid smells there is. Our house just permiates with it. I am having company Christmas and i'm worried about this.. She's a strictly indoor dog except when she has to go outside to potty. The thing is, I don't want to call her vet for advice because they always try and suck me dry.. They will tell me they can't give me any advice unless I bring her in and believe it or not, in the past year, I've probably put $2,000 on my Visa for the vet!
SOOOO here's my question: Does anybody have any suggestions as to what I can give her over the counter or home remedy for gas? PLEASE help! THANKS FOR ANY ADVICE!

Ok I HAVE noticed that since I've been giving her about a 1/4 c of plain yogurt a day, her gas isn't as bad.. she still has it bad, but not as much... After reading the articles, and THANKS SO MUCH for the links, I realized that I am feeding her too much all at once, on the floor and she is like, gobbling it SO fast, she is inhaling all that air. And she doesn't get that much exercise because of her cough which, I just read, exercise also helps.. so, here's what i'm going to do and i'm SO excited about this! hahaha

1. Separate her daily food ration to smaller meals
2. Use a wider dish so that she has to eat slower
3. Elevate the dish so that she doesn't bend down to eat
4. Continue giving her plain yogurt a day
5. Exercise her more

In humans I read that peppermint and garlic help but i'm not sure if that would be harmful to dogs.

4|2|Yes, greyhounds are notorious for the noxiousness, lol! We give ours yogurt at least every other day, about 3tbsp at each feeding with their food.....and other than yogurt, AVOID dairy products with dogs in general, like milk, cheese, cottage cheese.....those items just make them stink up the joint :P Eating slower also helps as they dont get as much air in their bellies they have to get rid of. Another thing you can do it is realllly bad, is give them a Beano tablet, we had an older greyhound we had to do this with or, like you, it would permeate the house.|saint6811|waylan@comcast.net|16:27:40|12/13/2010|

They make bowls that put me in mind of short angel food or bundt cake pans. These would work for a big dog. I have a sneaking suspicion this is a beagle or smaller and those pans would be too deep. Maybe you can make a dish by putting an upside down small bowl in a bigger dish in the center so she has to slow down to eat around it.. Brown rice in food will give gas too and fierce funky breath like dead fish.

Also ask your friends about their vets. Many do give meds if you ask or perhaps buddy up with one of the people in the office that's a tech. The laws in our state say the dog has to have been in in the last year to dispense medicine without a visit with the dog. if you have another pet that's been in in the last year sometimes they will mark it on their records that it was for that one to keep out of trouble. For the money you have spent they should bend over backwards. Also when you go to the vet and they try to prescribe you amoxicillan ask for the full size bottle of powdered and tell them you will mix it and home. The difference between the full size and the pill bottle size they give is 10 dollars and there are way more than 2 deals in the bottle so you save about 8 batches times the 12 bucks they charge for one. They will give you a syringe and bottle with it if you ask. And you have it waiting when you need it on a weekend or bad weather day when you can't get in. My vet says its ok to give robitussin for a cough. I usually get the kids one. You can look up online for the dosage by searching your pets weight and dosage of the robitussin. I wouldn't recommend the cough syrup for cats though and would recommend checking for other animals.

Your ideas are great about the feeding and should help you too. If it is an older dog introduce activity little by little. If the dog is a senior it would be like taking your grandmother on a jog or making her go chase a frisbee! Good luck with getting your doggie to feel better and smell better! 11|1|Day 1 of the great "gas off"|destiny|destinyroger@yahoo.com|11:06:35|12/14/2010|

When I fed Bridget her nightly meal in a wider dish that was elevated, she didn't know what to do at first but by golly, she was forced to take 1 or 2 pieces at a time this way and eat it.. problem is though, she drops it on the floor and THEN eat it, which cancels the whole reason why her dish is elevated:( but... she DID eat much much more slowly. She is SO use to being gluttonous, that giving her small meals instead of two bigger ones a day, she is constantly walking around the house scavenging for more food.
This morning, she didn't even eat all her food which is rare BUT I have to say... she hasn't let a "bomb" since yesterday!

If you put gravy on it I bet she wouldn't drop it on the floor. Just scatter a little on top. She will get used to the elevated dishes. I even have my cats dishes elevated on a bed type lap table. 14|3|Day 2 of the great gas off|destiny|destinyroger@yahoo.com|10:56:42|12/15/2010|

I'll try the gravy but she may like that so much, she'll start gobbling again. Right now, she is only able to take one or two pieces at a time with it elevated and now she's eating so slow, her stomach actually has time to register that its full and she's not leaving some in the dish which is almost unheard of with her!

OK day two... She popped off twice yesterday.. I would say from a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being severe which is what she was, i'd say today, she's a 5 probably.

My prettiest cat makes the worst smells!!! My dogs are good w/out brown rice otherwise... pppppppppppppuuuuuuuuuuuuuuueeeeeeeeeeeeeeeewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww!

Glad she is slowing down some. And the gas is backing off? I always adjust feeding to leaving a little more than last time if there's none left unless she's a gobbler without a stop trigger! What kind is she? Some just eat til they puke and definitely need the small meals. Mine luckily eat gradually so they have free feeding all day. The yougurt is a great help too though and a couple little dollops each meal is not bad but other diary will make the gas worse. Hopefully will ease her tummy some because I am sure she is not comfy with her belly either. How much does she weigh? You know a little pepto doesn't hurt a dog either.....

She's what you'd call a large size wiener dog, about 35 pounds last she was weighed. Her main goal in life is eating. She has an incurable chronic cough so hasn't been as active as she use to be in younger age. I am trying to walk her to the end of our acre and back at least once or twice a day.

Sounds like a cutie! Is she overweight? That will make her cough some. My aunts beagle was always scavaging for food and even begged for it even though she had enough to eat. Some will always be that way. She was 35 lbs too. Had a really constant cough. My beagle had the cough but wasn't an over eater or chubby even though he was a blind senior when I rescued him. I had an Austrailian Shepard tri color that had a cough his whole life when he was nervous.. Did they say the cause of the cough at the vet? Is there any heart trouble or fluid? 18|3|DAY 3 of the great gas off-disappointing|destiny|destinyroger@yahoo.com|11:33:41|12/16/2010|

I'd upload a pic of Bridget but I don't know how at the moment... Let me tell you... the vet has run every test in the book on her, scans, x rays, ultra sounds, bloodwork, you name it.. I even had a second opinion.. they even pulled some of her teeth.. kept me stringing only to finally be told that she's got a chronic incurable cough and there's nothing that can be done except give her these $30 a month pills for the rest of her life.. I have a cat that has a gum disease that has cost me probably $2,000. Last time I saw the vet, I told her I was going to be taking my Visa bill with me to my grave.. she just chuckled.. Anyway, Bridget has taken a number of diff antibiotics and steroids with no luck too.. The pills she's taking now, are for cough and wheezing and although they don't completely take it away, they keep it manageable. They said she has a strong heart.

As for her weight, it goes up and down depending on how much she can pilfer when we're not looking or gone on a trip and how much I can get her out to exercise. Bridget lives for her eating.. We have to keep an eye on everything.. the trash, the cat's littler box, the cat's food dishes..etc. When she goes outside, she'll eat every bug in her path and sometimes tries to go "cat truffle" hunting when we're not looking.. She camps out where ever someone is eating and watchs you out of the corner of her eye in hopes she'll see a piece of food drop to the floor. She makes constant "sniffing" rounds thru out the house every day..

OK.. DAY #3 was very disappointing. I had my daughter here for a visit and Bridget's smell permeated the house twice. The day before, I rated her at a 5 I think... yesterday she was up to a 6. No people food ingested, she ate her daily food ration in 3 small meals plus 2 tiny biscuits and 1/4 cup of plain greek yogurt. THIS MORNING she popped off once already BUT THERE IS A *BIG* CHANGE.. She has not eaten her morning meal AT ALL, which is totally not like her. All she did was fish out her little biscuit and eat that... She has made one sniffing round thru the kitchen and has slept all morning... i'm keeping an eye on her..

She's eaten the same food for 12 years, Atta Dog. We've tried giving her other foods, even Pedigree last month and she didn't like it. She loves her Atta Dog. We can buy the huge bags at Costco which is great because we have 2 other large outside dogs. We've even tried giving her the lamb & rice mixture which another of our dogs was on and she didn't care for it. She gets 1 or 2 biscuits a day and we try not to make a practice of giving her people food but well, she knows what a MCDs bag looks and smell like when we walk in the door so we DO give her a french fry and when we have pizza we'll give her a little of the crust etc etc...

Continue the yogurt at least as long as she is on the antibiotic, it will help maintain/restore the natural flora balance which can help reduce or prevent the gassiness and/or loose stools. Also, if she is being picky with eating, she may have a little 'sour stomach' from the antibiotic also (I know there are a couple that give me a sour stomach, common side effect of the meds). Try adding some canned, pureed pumpkin or sweet potatoes (often cheaper than pumpkin) to her food, it may entice her to eat a little....but dont be overly concerned as long as she is drinking adequately if she is picking at her food for a couple days.

Joy :)

THANKS FOR ALL YOUR INPUT AND REPLIES! No, she's not taking antibiotics now as they did nothing for her.. She's on cough and wheezing meds for the rest of her life as the cough she has is chronic and incurable. She use to take these two pills twice a day but now she's down to only taking them once a day.

One thing I try to do is keep the air purifying running here in the living room where she sleeps and try to keep the temp moderate. She wears a sweater at night as we don't have central heating, only a wood stove. We're doing all we can for her. I may investigate wither it would help to have a humidifier or vaporizer running.. don't know.. what we do for our pets... but you know what, Bridget is my buddy, my best little friend.. She's occupied that one corner of the couch for 12 years! Course now, we have to help her get up on it... Use to be she'd go with me on all my walks to but like I mentioned in an earlier post, I now can only get her to walk to the back of our acre and back most days.

Pumpkin and rice was one of the foods the online vets told me to give her when she had colonitis or however you spell it.. I give her pumpkin every now and then but I have to be careful with it because it makes her stools too loose.
