This is so horrid it sounds like something out of a BAD comedy ... Asked for ONE day off for my equivalent of a father-in-law's (Rodney and I have been living together about a year but haven't gotten the legal paper yet - and it was his dad) funeral. We have company issued cell phones but since I was given the day off and since I was attending a FUNERAL I didn't have it with me. There was a message from someone while I was at the funeral, of course. However, I didn't go right home afterwards. We went to his mother's house where all the family was gathered. Got home last night just after 8:00 PM. Responded via email to the message since some people get up with the sun and for them 8:00 PM ... well, it's too late. Anyway, got this message from a manager this morning, "While I understand you were at a funeral all we needed was to talk to you but we could not since you were not answering your phone. Your company issued phone needs to be on and answered." There's more to the letter but holy cow ... REALLY???? I should just point out that I have NEVER missed another call on my company cell phone! This ONE ... during a FUNERAL! I am so unbelieveably disappointed in this company and in that manager .... AAAARRRGGGHHHH ~ Thanks for letting me vent. Sandy

Thanks AngNC ... who does?! We all understand responsibilities but we all know family is our first responsibility! And for heaven's sakes ... I didn't ignore the call. I did respond. I just didn't have the phone with me. I wrote the manager back and pointed out that I had looked up in the company handbook ... the guidelines that they came up with ... and it says I should have 3 days PAID off. Not ONE day off UNPAID (I was told our pay for holidays, bereavement, etc. have been taken away) and then nasty emails about not answering the phone on that day off. He wrote back that I wasn't in trouble ... he just wanted me to understand the company cell phone policy. As far as I'm concerned, he can take that company cell phone and ... well I won't say it on here but what I'm thinking isn't very nice. Just so disappointed, too, because I was so excited to make the career change from law enforcement into the private sector (went from being a police officer to being a private investigator) with a company that promotes themselves as a Christian company. What he said is not only pretty "un"Christian but it's just plain mean! Whew ... am feeling a little better but still ... 2|1|Some companies think you are their property....no lie. I tell my mgrs (in a diplomatic manner of course) that I work to live, not live to work, and they essentially 'rent' me by the hour.|saint6811|waylan@comcast.net|15:50:20|12/11/2010|

That is a good line ... I like that. I wish I had heard that earlier and I would have used it. Then I wouldn't be out here without my family now. That makes it worse I guess - they had a rush case in Wichita, KS, so I left this morning at 0400 to get out here and handle the case. Instead of getting maybe a, "thanks for getting this one for us" I get that silly message that they just needed to talk to me yesterday and couldn't because I wouldn't answer my phone! When I brought up the 3 days I was suppose to get off I get the line about paid time off being taken away and when I said, basically, who cares about the pay ... why didn't I get to spend the 3 days off with my family my manager actually said, "I thought you just wanted Friday off ..." 6|3|Just because the funeral is done in a day, doesnt mean you may not need time to be there for your DH or other family...or have some time to grieve without distraction yourself. |saint6811|waylan@comcast.net|16:50:04|12/11/2010|
