it doesnt taste so great but it does work! I buy the 6 pack of cans and will start with 1. HTH! 3|2|Prune juice is high in sugar though, and she shouldnt have the sugar due to her diabetes.....Try metamucil or Benefiber that you mix into drinks.....if you take it regularly, it should work for you....get the sugar free or unflavored type. :)|saint6811|waylan@comcast.net|10:52:09|11/28/2010|

when i worked in the nursing home we gave out the cocktail of milk of magnesia with a chaser of orange juice it kinda cruddles in the stomach and you go pretty quickly. maybe this will work good luck melody 5|2|Ah, yes the constipation cocktail! :P LOL We mix with either orange juice (the juice turns a funky green color, but no matter there) or prune juice...I'd have to agree with the milk of mag since you can't have the Metamucil or similar products....colace never did anything for me either. Another thing you could try is walnuts, they have fiber and omega oils that may help.|saint6811|waylan@comcast.net|10:55:20|11/28/2010|

I have to take meds that can cause constipation but since I munch on cashews every night, I have no problem. The magnesium & maganese in cashews are also known to be natural relaxants. :)

Thanks for looking, Donna 11|1|Tap water, fresh out of the faucet 1st thing in the morning.....|maraj|maraj64@hotmail.com|11:25:31|11/28/2010|

Do NOT run the water for a few seconds, if you'd normally do that. Have the glass ready underneath when you turn on the faucet 1st thing in the morning. It might not taste the greatest but it should help.
Drinking plenty of water in general should help some anyway but there's something about that 1st dose of tap water that usually helps loosen things up.
But this is something you need to discuss w/your dr. Maybe Senekot-S would be the safest med, for both you AND baby.
I was given a prescription multivitamin to take as soon as I found out I was pg & for some reason, as long as I took that pill every day, I had no trouble w/constipation (I thought for sure the multivitamin would CAUSE constipation).
Hope you get some relief. :)

Milk of Magnesia or other laxatives
We generally do not recommend laxatives for pregnant women, although providers may recommend them under special circumstances. (Some physicians recommend them sooner than others.)

We are cautious with laxatives because their regular use can make your intestinal system dependant on them. Of special concern during pregnancy, laxatives can cause intestinal cramping that may be hard to differentiate from preterm labor.

That said, you are not alone in dealing with constipation during pregnancy. Many pregnant women have it, to varying degrees, and we have several suggestions that may help relieve the problem.

Our first recommendation is to drink more fluids — about three quarts a day. Most of that should be water.

Fiber-rich foods also are good for reducing constipation. Eat more fruits and vegetables, whole-grain breads (check the wrapper for at least 3 grams of fiber per slice), brown rice, oat bran and beans (pinto, garbanzo, kidney and the like).

If you increase fluids and fiber in your diet and still have problems, then you can try a supplement, such as fiber pills (FiberCon is one example) or fiber powders (such as Metamucil) that can be mixed with liquid.

These steps will relieve most pregnancy-related constipation. However, if you still need help after these measures, try a stool softener, such as Colace. Stool softeners are available without a prescription.

If that also fails, talk with your provider about laxatives, including Milk of Magnesia. Yes, Milk of Magnesia is safe and will quickly fix the problem — but it isn't the best long-term solution during pregnancy for the reasons we described above. So, we prefer it far down the list of strategies.
