Hi all....I'm really sorry I haven't been around much....life has taken some twists and turns...Not only am I scared.....but I want to make sure I have as much insurance coverage to provide the best care possible for my dh as possible....(he is 48)

My dh has recently been diagnosed with a 4cm mass in his left renal area......the reports say possible renal cell carcinoma.....I'm taking him in tomorrow for a complete urine analysis and bloodwork.....

I have Federal Blue Cross Blue Shield Basic coverage through my employer......and next week is open season...the only time during the year that I can switch coverage.

My dh can pick up insurance through his work for just himself...and I'm wondering if I should research this option....to see if having 2 insurances to make sure we have the utmost coverage.....but I'm just lost....

Does anyone have personal experience?
Thoughts?
Guidance????

Anything is appreciated.....thank you in advance.....

1|1|Yes definitely research it. Or see if you can up your coverage to have less deductible or copays.. etc. |Kristy|mi3zons1@yahoo.com|15:50:59|11/03/2010|

My mom is currently waiting for her open enrollment period so she can upgrade her insurance before she has to have surgery as of right now it would cost her about $8000.

First of all, I wanted to let you know that I will be praying for you and your hubby. Cancer SUCKS!! It takes it's toll on everyone, not just the patient. I agree with Kristy, make sure that you can get coverage to lower the copays and things. My hubby was 37 when he was diagnosed with cancer and we had insurance through is job at Intel and it was pretty good, but after being off work for a year, they laid him off and cut out the insurance, so he was without coverage for almost a year til his medicare started. I wish you the best and hope that he will be okay (((HUGS)))

3|1|I would also research it and see what the best option is insurance wise. You are both in my thoughts and prayers, and I agree with Bekka, Cancer SUCKS and does take a toll on everyone not just the patient... Good luck with the options you choose for insurance.|kandywolf|kandywolf@gmail.com|17:34:32|11/03/2010|

but remember something when you are looking into insurance...make sure it covers preexsisting conditions...last thing you need to be doing is getting insurance you can not use...at least for what you want it for....hugs to you...feel free to email me just to rant and rave...been there..done that.. 5|3|Jodie is right....they may consider it pre-existing since diagnostics were begun before insurance was started....just read the fine print, ask a lot of questions. You are all in my thoughts and prayers....Kelly, if you need us, we're here.....just because one of our own wanders away for a bit, doesnt mean they arent still in our fold....big hugs.|saint6811|waylan@comcast.net|19:01:54|11/03/2010|

I'm hoping that the pre-existing thing won't be an issue...because with my insurance.....I currently have BCBS Basic Coverage....I would just be going from Basic to Standard coverage....so it would still be BCBS....but honestly......I have no idea.......

I'm nervous, scared and stressed.....for my dh.....he's such a wonderful man and tries so hard to be the best father and dh.....

Thank you all for your thoughts and your prayers....they mean alot to me at this moment.

Kelly 8|2|I'd definitely research it. Can you also pick up some AFLAC? So sorry you have to deal with this. We were able to pick up some supplemental dental insurance for one year when our DD had some orthodontic stuff done. They should have plan links up now .|Sara_s_Mom|IClipCoupons@gmail.com|19:40:24|11/03/2010|

Sending positive vibes your way.

Here are my thoughts on the insurance situation. Call DH's employer first and find out if he can enroll. Generally, if you are allowed to waive coverage when the plan is established, the only way you can enroll with no pre-ex (sometimes at all) is if you lose coverage and trigger a qualifying event. You need the certificate of credible coverage to get the waiver of pre-ex.

I don't know anything about Fed benefits. Do you have a FSA? If so, maybe you could increase that election to cover the extra expenses.

Kelly,

Not sure where you work, but since you posted "Federal Blue Shield" Makes me think you are a Fed worker (smart aren't I lol)... Anywho, Federal employees health insurance does NOT allow for the insurance companies to ask about pre-existing conditions OR deny you insurance because of it. One of many great benefits of being a fed.

If you need additional information please let me know. I have all the handouts at work (I'm a fed) for open season and I'd be happy to send you info or give you my number at work if you want to call.

you have Blue Cross Blue Shield Basic insurance. you can add your husband on your isnance as family.

if it is not hmo.

best to take ppo that you can take your husband to any best doctor at expensive cost.

that what my friend did switch insurance first one hmo and he had to get ppo that his wife had cancer so ppo will accept best doctors in big city at no matter cost so he wanted his wife get better thru radation at ucla.

hmo insurance maybe only reference to other doctor for cancer that insurance can accept.

hope your husband is okay.

best to ask insurance that where your work should have open house for reps from differnt insurances.
