Ok. If 3 bundles of shingles cover 100 sq. ft. & the sq. footage of my roof is approx. 1700, am I correct in figuring I'd need 51 bundles of shingles?

51 divided by 3 = 17......

Would appreciate input on this. Thanks! :)

A closer figure for the sq. footage came to be about 1694, if I measured right, so I thought 1700 would be better to go by & get a few extra bundles to have on hand during the project & then an extra couple to keep for later. ;)

The starter course is around ALL the edges, bottom and side...it's shingles turned upside down to provide a stiff edge at the roof edges against the wind, etc....
also, the ridge really sucks up the shingles. If you're using three tab shingles, they are cut into 3 pieces, and run over the whole ridge or very top egde of the roof 9|4|Thank you! :) When I measured, I started/finished about a foot over the roof's edges in L & W....|maraj|maraj64@hotmail.com|18:47:26|11/03/2010|

I wanted to make sure I gave enough room for error OVER-estimate rather than under-estimate, kwim? I'd prefer to end up w/plenty of extra shingles than not enough.
This won't be getting done tho til next spring/early summer. Hoping I can catch a good sale on shingles in between now & then cuz sheesh! I'm only needing new shingles at this point & the cost of those alone is running a little steep so the guy who does it better know what he's doing & be quick about it. LOL

Ondura is definitely something I'll be pondering, if I can find a carrier of it around here. I have considered going w/a steel roof but found there to be some things I'm not overly comfortable w/in a steel roof - Steel roofing can be applied over existing shingles but that then usually voids the lifetime warranty on it; does it attract lightning; will heavy rains &/or hail be more noisy; will the steel retain heat in the summer. These are just a few things I've been wondering about & have gotten conflicting views on all of them.
So the Ondura roofing is certainly a welcome recommendation if it turns out to be more cost-efficient along w/more quality in durability. And I like the life-time warranty it offers. :)

14|2|My husband and I have done many roof jobs. Metal is the way to go if your subdivision/HOA etc allows. Much faster to put on, releases heat faster in the summer, and will outlast a composition roof many times over.|carmenanderson|cloudcars@verizon.net|19:48:36|11/03/2010|
