Some butthead hijacked hubby's credit card number and made a few online charges, luckily our bank caught it and put a stop to it right away, they thought something was suspicious cause we never used that card online. The thieves charged about $42 in Avon, they tried to charge at other places but were denied. Sorry just had to vent about thieves!!!!!!!!

$775 charge on it on walmart.com. they called us to say it was suspected fraudulent. There is getting to be alot more online scams/stealing but the good part is that there are also alot more warnings going out so the good people & business people have become more aware of it & what to watch for.
My mom is more aware if it & she doesn't even have a computer. But from watching tv news, reading the newspaper, Sr. Citizens groups & my relaying info to her, she stays well informed & cautious. If there's something she's not sure about, she asks me.
Like last year when she got a phoney 2010 Census "booklet" in the mail. I knew it was fake cuz it was a whole "booklet" of questions, alot more than the mere 10 the REAL Census would be asking, & it was too soon, so I told her to toss it. But whoever sent it pestered her w/follow-up calls & told her if she didn't fill out she could go to prison. I was fuming cuz of the stupid threats but also cuz this was early last winter & the Census wasn't due to even begin coming out til March. I got the numbers from the Caller ID & turned it into the Sheriff's Dept. along w/the phoney Census booklet they'd sent. The last time one of those fake "Census" calls came in, I happened to be there & answered the phone. Told the person on the line that I'd turned it all over to the Sheriff's Dept. & the only ones going to prison were their creepy a$$es. Needless to say, the calls stopped. The Sheriff's Dept. was able to track them to Indiana & then it was handed over to the authorities there & the Feds. Don't know what happened after that but I bet they won't be sending out anymore of their phoney crap. ;)

This was true of the American Airlines card via Citibank (the sort with an annual fee); my United card is a no-fee Visa and it wasn't available. The friend who told me about it described it as an application available on his pc.
(In case you don't know, there are no-fee airline mileage cards that accrue miles at about half the rate as fee-based. My primary card in an AmEx and I need another flavor for places that don't accept it).
AmEx fraud detection can be extreme but I'm glad its there (they once cut off my card entirely until I verified that a particular purchase a few hours earlier was indeed mine, but that verification took a few moments with a customer service rep clearly working in the USA -- the kind who could work unscripted. I saw the associated email when I got home.)
