We went to Columbus-OSU med. center this past Monday(Oct 11th)

They took 16 vials of blood (YES 16), 2-24 hour urine tests completed, 2 urine tests while there also a EKG (all normal) , chest x-rays (look good) Glucose-passed ( no diabetes), mammogram (done in March-all good) will get pap (need to finish up testing) this Thursday and... last trip for CT scan in Columbus soon after. Blood type matched perfect. .
Met with surgeon, necrologist, social worker and donor advocate today. We will know this Thursday/Friday if I am compatable to be his donor. PLEASE..keep'um all crossed for Jim's sake. He's my friends (Missie) dad. He's a wonderful father, ...grandfather, husband and friend...66 years young, on dialysis 1 1/2 years. I WANT to help change his life. Melissa and I stayed the night in Columbus since we had to be at OSU so early, had dinner, shopping and laughed our ass's off.
My post is about educating people on the importance of being organ donors..live or after your death. SO many people are on donor lists, waiting for a life changing surgery. I know two people, Jim and Tina, who is a friend of Dawson's sitter Jean, whom we call memaw. If I'm not suitable for Jim, I will try for Tina. I have a good life, a wonderful family--mom,dad,sister,my girls, an awesome boyfriend and some pretty amazing friends..this is the least I can do to pay it forward.

I go today for the PAP, will call OSU for test results from Monday and make CT scan apt. and with luck have a surgery date. 1|1|OMG, what a great gift, Not so sure I could be so brave.|bluh2oeyes|bluh2oeyes@yahoo.com|09:59:44|10/14/2010|

You are amazing!

It is so important and something we all have to talk to our families about (so they know our wishes too). The bone marrow registry is another worthy one to look into for anyone who wants to get on the list to potentially donate life saving marrow. 3|1|A wonderful post for all to read! It is so loving & unselfish of you to offer the priceless gift of life to your friends. They are very lucky to have you! :)
I was born w/only 1 kidney, which has served me quite sufficiently in my 46 yrs., & for that I feel very fortunate. But because of it, I've learned to appreciate the precious value of organ donation & have made sure to faithfully attach the "Donor" sticker to my driver's license at each renewal.
You are making a huge difference, not only for the recipient but also for the loved ones of the recipient! :)

DH and I both want to donate our organs and can't understand why everyone doesn't want to donate :( Especially since I'm sure 99% of people would not hesitate to accept an organ! How can you live with yourself knowing you would accept an organ from someone when you are not willing to donate your own organs??

9|3|One of the reasons some people choose not to donate (when it is end of life, and no particular recipient is listed) is because of the expense....the patient is charged for the cost of harvesting the organ(s), processing/testing, and delivery to an organ bank...of course, the OP's situation is different, so it may be that the recipient's insurance is paying for all of the testing, surgery to remove her kidney, her aftercare, etc. :)|saint6811|waylan@comcast.net|18:42:47|10/14/2010|

We held a benefit to help cover some expenses. He got a tax ID number becuae we got a few donations from bigger business's (Best Buy donated a huge flat screen plasm for us to auction) It's help, but still a long road.

Jim's daughter was tested, was a match but because of prior back surgeries and one comming up, she was excluded because of the pain meds she's on (narcotics) they never asked me to get tested, I was like.."ok so if Missie can't, what's you blood type" he said AB - ok umm..me too. So I said "I'll test to be your donor" I thought he was gonna fall over lol.

For me it was a easy choice. I have done wrongs in my life, but now I have been blessed with a good life. So for me, in my way of thinking, it's a way to pay it forward..but maybe doing this, it will somehow erase some of my bad I have done.

He's been on the national list for a year. 15|4|I meant INSURANCE lol|DAVESBABYDOLL|sheilarae83@frontier.com|10:01:06|10/15/2010|

The recipient's insurance pays those expenses.

If you had to pay to donate your organs, no one would be willing to donate :( 19|2|When there is no specific recipient, and organs are donated at the time of death (I am referring to this specific scenario), who is paying for the cost of harvesting? That would make no sense that a hospital would front the cost of it until a recipient was chosen, in the event that the organ was not donated in the time frame required. I am not referring to cases where there is a specific recipient lined up.|saint6811|waylan@comcast.net|13:54:22|10/15/2010|

I understand what you mean cuz I'm pretty sure organs can't be stored like blood can be, & a deceased person cannot possibly be kept on life support indefinitely, so I believe there has to be an immediate need.
But the sad part is I believe there is always a need.
When my nephew drowned at 16, he didn't have his driver's license yet & being a minor, it was up to his parents to donate any of his organs. His eyes, bone marrow & a heart valve were donated. If the person is an adult w/no donor direction, then I'm pretty sure it's up to the next of kin. I believe hospitals keep a list of donees & check that list to see who needs what, but I don't know if hospital staff approach the loved ones & ask or if the loved ones have to be the ones to offer. I don't know for sure tho how it works so am just kind of guessing.

we had a friend young son who passed away and in a HORRIBLY INCOMPETENT turn of events got a BILL for the harvesting. of course they called the hospital who could not apologize enough about the mistake ... but to answer your question. in the end, they found out that if a person has volunteered to be a donor of any organs when they pass the organs are matched to donors waiting. there is such a list for every organ imaginable (down to skin even). the doctor said he had never known of a situation where someone passed and had an organ that was unusable because they couldn't find anyone who needed it. so, the insurance companies always pay for the donees expenses because, unfortunately, there is always someone ill enough to have had themselves placed on a waiting list for that particular organ.

does that make any sense? i know what i'm trying to say but i'm not sure i'm saying it correctly ... s 24|2|Yes, thank you, Sandy....that does make sense....I appreciate it :)|saint6811|waylan@comcast.net|16:54:02|10/15/2010|
