Hi: it's a bit more tricky than you might think. I have seen many nice things in stores/on-line etc, but I want each and every thing that I give to be OF USE. Please think hard and post your ideas. The basket cost must be under $25. and contain several items. I am assuming that these are for elderly ladies (not gentlemen).
These persons are still residing in their own homes, but have Support Workers etc. Some may find it very difficult to get out to shop, and/or may not have any money to spend.
TIA
Kathryn
1|1|slippers or skid free socks might be one item you could put in.|shelly0418|michelle0418@centurytel.net|10:38:43|10/13/2010|
Michelle 2|1|having had a number of elderly relations in nursing homes etc, I can speak from experience that they don't really need any kind of perfumed lotions or costume jewelry ( there may be|suezz|clearys@comcast.net|10:43:54|10/13/2010|
exceptions but normally those things are wasted.) I suggest a book of stamps, LINED writing paper, envelopes, pens, maybe NAZ stickers. Lots of ladies wear those snap front brunch coats/housecoats. If there is no diet issues, things like a tin of cookies or other special treat items( these are great for guests if the person can't eat them herself).
Small gift cards to local grocery store or drug stores would be helpful for expenses ( if the person is out and about).

3|1|I was going to say stamps too but Joy is so smart that she beat me to it. :0)|sunriver|sunriver@gmail.com|11:39:39|10/13/2010|
Also pre-stamped post cards, new deck of playing cards (folks always have these but a new deck is nice every so often), puzzle books, magazines (email me and I can send you links for many free ones if you want), seeds or gardening gloves if they garden. HTH 4|2|I mean Suezz, not sure why I thought you were Joy, but that is a compliment anyway. :0)|sunriver|sunriver@gmail.com|11:40:40|10/13/2010|

GCs to get their hair done would also be a great idea....the ladies always feel so much peppier when their hair looks nice :)|saint6811|waylan@comcast.net|16:52:06|10/13/2010|

I'm doing gift bags for my 3 neighbors. Papertowels is one item I've added. Everyone can use papertowels.

Card Games, Travel Size Games, checkers or chess games -- to help with the boring afternoons. From what I hear there are a lot of them!
Hard Candies and Peanut Brittle -- Don't all older people like this?
Books or small reading lights that attach to books or similar personal items.
Crossword Puzzles, word finds or similar game books
For Women: Socks. Lipstick (this always makes a woman feel better about herself. Stick with pinks and reds! LOL)
For Men: boxers, socks -- a small bottle of cologne -- I have heard some stories! They are still trying to impress the ladies!

THANKS!! 24|1|My Mom is always swiping my paper plates, napkins and paper towels for "bingo prizes" at the senior center|Abbicca|Abbicca@insightbb.com|19:04:50|10/14/2010|
Apparently those are pretty popular and taken quickly. I would also think of cleaning sponges or dish cloths and dish soap if they're still on their own. Most are single/widowed and are fixing food for one... normally not enough dishes to run a dishwasher.
Honestly, I think of items everyone needs and uses..... it may sound stupid, but toilet paper, body wash/soap, laundry soap, and paper plates would be rather helpful IMO. Most elderly women suffer from dry skin but you have to be careful with scented lotions. And most also feel "gussied up" if they have lipstick on....so that's a good idea that was mentioned.
Also be careful not to get the body washes or soaps with bath oil..... it can make the tub/floor slippery. Good luck!
26|2|Thanks Abbica, that tip about being careful to not give products that could make the tub/floor slippery, is a GOOD one!|missy|lovetotrade@hotmail.com|23:36:07|10/14/2010|
I spent the whole afternoon today, in a nearby town, searching out some of the great suggestions! I do hope to find more items too, and I am already picking some up for NEXT year, if they are really great items at exceptional prices. You really have to get stuff when you see it, or it could be long gone! I was lucky enough to find a School Supply Final Clearance area at one of the stores!!
Please keep those ideas coming!! And LMK if you see something great at a particular store please. I am currently in upstate NY, but I will be back in Florida in just over 4 weeks from now. I will be doing some baskets for both here and there.
TIA
