First I remember quizzing every other mom I ran into. Did they like their child's doctor and why? From doing that I had a couple names and from that I started asking the nurses when I was at the pre-natal appointments about what they thought about the ones I had heard about. I gleaned a little more info from them.

Basically the things I cared the most about was if they were supportive of breastfeeding (I think most are now, this was in '94 when I was pg with the oldest and it wasn't quite as supported then as now), what their hours were (I needed Saturday hours so DH would go with us sometimes) and that I think were my main ones. Most of them will give you a little meet and greet appointment so you can ask them in person. Thinking about what I know about you, I would probably ask if they will let you keep Timothy with you in case you need a blood transfusion. That way you'll know that his doctor supports that too. That would probably be a big thing to me if I were in your shoes.

Hope that helps. I've had superb baby doctors and one that I wish I could go back in time and tell off. Most of them are great, but you are smart for thinking ahead! 2|1|Is there a parent you can ask to recommend someone?|LindaOh|Martinl3@roadrunner.com|16:42:54|09/16/2010|

I started calling around but keep getting stuck on one thing... I want to find someone that has privileges at the hospital I am delivering at. I have a high risk of going into early labor and I would like to find one doctor that can see him in and out of the hospital. I didn't think this would be so hard to find. One can deliver me there but can't see the baby in the NICU. I asked if there are outside doctors that go into the NICU or if the NICU has their own doctors, but no one seems to know.

Tonight we have baby class at the hospital and tomorrow I see my OBGYN. I hope between the 2 I will have an answer.

So far all I have asked was if they take our insurance, their hours (remember I don't drive, so J will have to go after work) and if they have privileges.

Had theirs picked and had an appointment before baby was born. When baby was born about midnight pediatrition was there before 6 am the next morning to see the baby.

I think you would want to have one before baby is born. I live in a small area and some doctors that deliver babies also see patients. You can have a doctor for years, see the same doctor through out pregnany, and then have that same doctor be the baby's doctor. Crazy I know!

The reason I say this is as a first time mom, you're gonna freak out at 3 AM when your kid spikes a temp ;) Larger practices have after-hours nurses or at least after hours emergency line you can call and they'll talk you through it. When we moved to VA, we had to pick a doc from a list of doctors that were accepting new patients. I much prefer pediatricians to family doctors, at least while they're younger.

You should definitely ask whomever you're considering about what you do after hours. If they say go to the emergency room, you should keep looking! It is so important to be able to call in the middle of the night if you have an emergency.

Also, do some research into your community's "Best of" awards. There's a reason pediatricians get these awards --- because their patients vote for them. Also, don't forget to look at places like Angie's list or what have you, but take with a grain of salt. You can't please everybody and sometimes that person ends up writing a negative review.

Good luck! You definitely want to get one picked out because the pediatrician will be notified when he's born and will be in to check him over.

I asked both my OBGYN and my family doctor and they gave me some names...then if you can, you may want to set up one visit with them before your baby born, like an interview thing...I did this and was able to get to know them and see which one is on the same page with me, about breastfeeding, formula feeding, how to handle sickness etc...and don't forget to ask about after hours care, urgent care, etc

I picked the one that I feel is on the same page with me...my family doctor suggested this to me and she said it will make things go easier in the long run in your ped has the same view as you.

I also agree..pick the one that practice in a large group, instead of just one or two doctors in a clinic...the one in a large group usually has after hours nurses or on call doctors you can call and urgent care clinic for the weekend, etc...there were many times that we need to use these during his first year...

I did this one and half year ago..he's 15 mo now...feel free to email me if you more questions..HTH
