14 0|0|Cord Blood Registry - Has anyone done this? (M)|RobinsCrazyWorld|robinmarie72@gmail.com|20:41:49|08/24/2010|
Posted on Aug-24-10 at 08:41 PM (Eastern) by 24.20.40.237

It runs about $61 a month for the first and then like $150- a year after that.
I have been thinking of doing this and have to decide VERY VERY soon so the paper work is ready and the registry is set if i go into labor early.

. 2|1|Nope. Never saw the point. No guarentees it would work to fix anything anyhow. And expensive to boot. I'd rather save for my kids' college funds.|Kristy|mi3zons1@yahoo.com|23:29:18|08/24/2010|

7|3|With the health issues I have been dealing with for almost 20 years if this would have helped me and my parents were given the chance to do it but passed it up I am sure they would have felt like crap for not doing so.|RobinsCrazyWorld|robinmarie72@gmail.com|08:06:16|08/25/2010|

I don't want to be in that position. We are just having one child and it sounds expensive at first, but for one it will be less then $3,000 (if we just do blood) for the first 5 years. Storage is only $150 a year after the first year. If that someday saves his life or improves it I am all for it. Even if it doesn't, having it as an option to try will be worth the money. He wont have siblings to hopefully match with if needed.

Robin,

I don't know 100% all your troubles but is there a possibility that it could ever help you as well in the future?

9|2|As of right now none of my issues would be helped with this. Besides I would feel bad using this for me... What if somethinghappened and I took it away as an option for him.|RobinsCrazyWorld|robinmarie72@gmail.com|08:21:14|08/25/2010|

We have ours stored at New England Cord Blood Bank. At the time PJ was born we could not store tissue samples at all just the cord blood and I think it was the a WONDERFUL decision. My husband's family has a long history of cancer, all different kinds, and we saved PJ's cord blood jic he or any of his children came down with a disease that possibly could be helped or even cured with cord blood. The only thing I would do differently now, if I could, is pay for the 10 or 20 storage flat rate fee. We currently pay $125 a year for storage and next May we will have paid in what we could have paid for 20 years of storage. (Mind you that this was 7 years ago.) We simply didn't have the $ at the time. I don't know if we'll ever use the blood, but that's ok, we have it if we need it! :)

As for feeling bad if YOU ever need to us it I'll lyk that PJ gave 5 vials of cord blood so it's not like there's only one or just a few drops, it's a lot so if YOU need to use some don't feel bad, there will be plenty left if Timothy needs some too. :)

Oh! another thing you may want to know is you will NOT be able to hold Timothy immediately...... he will be rushed over to the baby table and the cord blood drawn before they cut the umbilical cord away from his belly. Just thought you'd like to know so you'd know that they weren't trying anything "funny" by not giving him to you or hubby immediately

If there's anything else I can answer or you please feel free to post or email. HTH :)

here is the link to the web page for NECBB

http://www.cordbloodbank.com/index.php

They even have their pricing guide right on the website for you. Now, if you are interested in NECBB plmk as I believe the discount to be referred is $250.00. (For us it is someting like 1 or 2 years free storage, just so you know.) I could be wrong but I am pretty sure it's that amount and I'd be more than happy to have the information emailed to you.

12|2|Thanks Jackie - I already am prepared for the fact that I wont get to hold him right away. Because he will be c-section and because of some of my health concerns I know they will take him away at least for a few minutes before I get a chance to hold him. |RobinsCrazyWorld|robinmarie72@gmail.com|11:55:11|08/25/2010|

There is sooooo much promise in this! My dad had a stem cell transplant when he had cancer. They had to use this own because he did not have any brothers and sisters and it did not work. They said if cord blood like this would have been available (of course it was not in the 1940's when he was born) it would almost cerainly have worked! It is undeveloped cells. They can be a perfect match! I don't have any kids but if I did or ever do, I would eat bologna sandwiches to be able to afford to do this! I feel very passionate about this! (can you tell!) 13|2|My grandpa suffers with Parkensons. I hope that maybe they can come up with something using this to help with that. We don't have a history of cancer in my family, but how long can you just hope it doesn't happen to you... KWIM?|RobinsCrazyWorld|robinmarie72@gmail.com|11:57:54|08/25/2010|
