A little background: My dd13 went to dentist for a small filling on a molar. She started to get discomfort with it immediately after and this has continued for about 5 months. So far, the dentist thought the filling was too high so she sanded it down on a few occasions. Then she thought the tooth is being sensitive to the filling itself, so removed the filling and packed it with something to calm the nerve down and put a temp filling in. It still is very sensitive and now dd can't really bite on it without it really hurting.

The dentist has referred her to a specialist who charges $125 just to get in the door. We have no insurance and, since hubby was unemployed last year and we lost the house and went BK, we cannot get a credit card. Since he is working steady, he cannot qualify for state medical or low income. He's only been working about 7 months so we don't even have savings built up yet. It's been paycheck to paycheck until we get on our feet.

I really do not know what to do about this. I feel so stuck. When we were losing the house and lost his job we sold everything of value we could so we don't even have anything to sell.

I guess my question is, has anybody had a problem tooth like this? Any suggestions about paying this (apparent) huge dental bill that's coming? ANy programs that you know of to help?

Thanks in advance

That was interesting to read. Sometimes it takes time to calm down.

I've had to go to an endodontist after a root canal tooth still hurt. He looked at the tooth, may have done an x-ray (sorry - it was years ago) and said maybe it had a fracture that he couldn't see and if it still hurt, have it extracted. It is 4th from the front, so extraction did not appeal to me ;) In the end, I left the temp crown on for a long, long, time. (Like months and months) and then finally had a crown put on. It took months to calm down.

I use to be a da if the tooth is still bothering her after temporary filling,
It probably has a crack in it.She will probably need a crown. It is unreal
with dentistry now a days. Try to get her not to chew on it for a while. 6|1|Went to dentist today|hudge4|hudge95@yahoo.com|19:32:04|08/19/2010|

The filling is still solid. But she did find a spot that needed grinding down so she did that. DD thinks it helped so we shall see. She had it ground down before but it didn't help. In the meantime, we are looking into the dental insurance link (TYVM) and hopefully get that in place before dd needs some major work.

I called to cancel my last appointment because I didn't have enough for the appointment and they offered to work out a payment plan. They allowed me to write 5 checks for $138.00 each that they would deposit once a month. That's what I owed them for my daughter after the insurance picked up their portion! UGH! But they said they do it all the time for patients, because the understand what the economy is like right now.

Maybe the specialist offers something similar? I don't have credit cards anymore either.
