Happy AUGUST to everyone! Thankfully the long, hot summer is beginning to wind down; I've had it with the heat. The kids are returning to school, which must be nice for parents everywhere...LOL. So, what better time to have a little RAOK event for all the RS members in good standing?

Too many are not even aware they or a loved one have a mental illness, & many more suffer in silence due to the stigma associated w/it, such as shame or weakness. Mental illness is REAL & it affects everyone involved - family, friends, co-workers - & it can be very frightening for the person experiencing the mental illness. It is often misunderstood but it is NOT a sign of weakness & NOONE should feel ashamed as it does not discriminate against age, race or sex. It is a chemical imbalance in the brain, thru NO fault of the person experiencing it.
A cure for cancer would most definitely be a Godsend & is no less important than a cure for mental illness. But I feel that a cure for mental illness would have a more positive effect on the world in that it would save billions of dollars by helping to reduce the number of people abusing drugs & alcohol, on disability, in prisons & in hospitals as well as reducing the number caught in the legal system, be it thru court hearings for mental illness determinations, guardianship/placement &/or crimes, changing lives for the better so people w/mental illness can be more productive members of society. And needless to say, it would greatly reduce the thousands of tragic deaths by suicide & the injuries caused by failed suicide attempts that occur every day.

Woo hoo! My apologies for the delay in posting results. I've been having computer problems, and am trying to maintain what I have until Thursday, when I get a new advanced computer. Anyhow...the "answer" I was looking for was -- mental illness. According to the World Health Organization, mental and behavioral disorders are present in a varying 10% of the adult population at any point in time. Mental and neurological disorders account for 13% of total worldwide disability. In addition to the expense for health and social services, the loss to society -- including the impact on families, crime and unemployment -- is incalculable.
