holy cow, everyone reading this is going to think i'm just a drama queen or that i have to be making this stuff up (definitely NOT a drama queen - i work in law enforcement and am trained to "keep my cool" and am pretty good at it, i think anyway ... and this is absolutely not made up!)
my cousin that i posted about in june who's 3 year old son drowned, then posted about again about 2 weeks ago when their truck got stolen and totaled and THEY got billed for it ... well, yesterday she was driving and knew she was getting too tired to drive ... yep - she wrecked the "good" truck. she's okay and on the positive side, this was the truck that they did have full coverage insurance on ~ but, my goodness, i don't know how much more this family can take without ripping apart at the seams!
she says she didn't really doze off but that she was just sleepy and a cat ran out in front of her and she swerved to miss it and ran, head on, into a concrete pylon. i think she probably did actually doze off and that she just overcorrected from that and ran into the pylon but whatever the actual cause, the truck is now totaled also!
if anyone has any awesome words of wisdom or even any "i've been there myself and it really does get better!" stories that i could pass on to her i would certainly appreciate it.

Although I know that after losing her son the truck/$ problems are in some ways a good diversion from the pain as odd as that might sound.
One thing you can do is encourage them to spend time together. That seems obvious, but after losing a child many couples split. It's hard to have that much pain in the same room and they may not be able to communicate well with each other. If your family can do anything to encourage them to spend time, that is probably the best thing. You might suggest that if possible they make a daily lunch date, dinners, walks, etc.

sunriver, WOW ... you are absolutely right about the diversion of the vehicles. i never even thought of that but as horrible as the stolen truck and the bill was and as horrible as her wreck was ... it did, at least for a moment, take her mind off of jon-jon.
