8 0|0|Does anybody on here have to eliminate dairy products from their diet--See Inside|bcmunns|bcmunns@bellsouth.net|08:51:06|08/01/2010|

My grandson Cooper has been going thru extensive testing at UNC Childrens Hospital in Chapel Hill because he was not gaining weight or growing in
height--in other words his growth has been stunted

After all the test were done and finished they say he has Eosinophilic Esophagitis which is an inflammatory condition in which the wall of the esophagus becomes filled with
large numbers of eosinophils, a type of while blood cell.

In Cooper's case he would eat but after 1 or 2 bites he was full and could not eat anymore because the food did not pass thru into his disgestive tract like it should so he always felt full. He is on 2 medications for this and one of them is a liquid steroid and a reflux medicine and the medicines has helped him a lot and we have seen a increase in his appetite.

The doctors have decided this is caused by a food allergy in Cooper so he had allergy testing and is allergic to milk products so they have eliminated all dairy products from his diet

What I need to know is if you have to eliminate dairy products what are some products that can be used that do not contain milk or whey for bread, cheese, butter or margarine and etc.

Any information will be most helpful as it is hard to tell an 8 year old you cannot eat this, this and this--Very depressing for him

His Mom and Dad will be getting more information from a dietician later but I just need too know for myself because he is over at my house a lot and I want to make sure I do the right thing for him.

Thanks so much for any input anyone will have

1|1|Betty, I had a milk allergy as a kid.....they didnt have dairy free products back then, so I had to just do without, which is difficult for a child to understand or deal with....thank goodness there are all kinds of products out there now: soybased milks, cheeses, yogurts, etc. Also for breads, there are wheat and whey free products made with soy or rice flours. It will be a matter of reading labels and product descriptions for awhile. Do a search for whey-free and dairy-free foods and products on Google, I'm sure you'll get alot of results to find items you can have at your house for him. Fortunately, I "outgrew" my allergy by the time I was about 12 or 13, hopefully this will be the case for Cooper. :)|saint6811|waylan@comcast.net|09:26:26|08/01/2010|

2|2|wanted to add, do a search at recipezaar.com for dairy free recipes too.....you may have to make foods from scratch for him to find him some goodies to have from time to time. :)|saint6811|waylan@comcast.net|09:28:06|08/01/2010|

You'll do well to shop more at natural markets like Whole Foods but by no means is that all..you can find plenty of dairy free stuff at your local market. Casein and whey have dairy in them, so don't buy products with those ingredients listed. Earth Balance makes a good dairy free margarine and instead of regular milk you can do soy milk or rice milk. Unsweetened rice milk is actually really good. Almond milk would work too. Read up online about vegan diets and products because they will have good recommendations for you even though you're not trying to adopt their diet to the letter. Follow Your Heart makes dairy free/casein free cheese. Finding bread is actually pretty easy..just scan the ingredients, alot surprisingly don't have milk or egg or butter. And don't laugh but if you buy the book "Skinny snoopy" it's a reference tool for people cutting out dairy (they cut out all animal products, because they are vegan but still lots of good help here)--it has lists of products you can buy. And nutritional yeast is a good tool for making foods taste cheesy and savory..it's a lot like parmesan cheese and can really jazz up a meal. Bottom line is this is totally doable and you can still eat good food. Best of luck! Here are a few links which may help.

I will be passing this on to my daughter also and I am going to check it out also.

I think it will be just a matter of getting used to all of this and knowing what to look for and buy for him.

He has been on the medication for 2 weeks now and no diary for 1 week and we have already seen an increase in his appetite
plus he has gained 3 pounds-still has a long way to go but it is a good start so far

Thank you both for all the information and any more you can think of will be greatly appreciated
6|2|What is he missing most? I eat a lot of gluten free things that are also dairy free...|Sara_s_Mom|IClipCoupons@gmail.com|10:06:20|08/02/2010|

Because many gluten intolerant people are also lactose intolerant. Pamela's makes some GF and Dairy free cookies - I'd link you to their site but it won't load :( I agree - shop in Whole Foods, and some Wegmans have a good GF section too. You can also shop at amazon for these things too. I also ordered some sample sized Dr. Lucy's cookies from Alice.com (Alice takes PayPal - woot!) to try before I commit to buying a case of them on Amazon. They are also dairy free (no eggs, milk)
