My son has ADHD and well we are not actally sure what that and is right now we are trying to get that diagnosed right now they are thinking bipolar but there is deffinately an and there. He did so poorly in school last year that he barely passed and he was in so much trouble he got kicked out of school twice and had in-school suspension more times than i can count and he was only in the third grade. Hes not a bad kid sometimes he just cant help himself. One minute he can be the sweetest little thing in the world and the next he is monster boy he has these mood swings that are so uncontrolable its not even funny. Like i said we are in the process of getting him diagnosed with whatever is going on with him we have appointments with a councelor, a psychiatrist, and he is going to be starting anger management classes but it has all been taking way to long to get started i have been waiting three months to get the ball rolling on this stuff. I dont want him to have the problems he had in school last year this year. Im hoping maybe an IEP will help him some how. So if anyone could help me out a little i would appreciate it

She has some learning disability's related to reading and has had the IEP in place since 1st grade. Her teacher initiated it, but I believe a parent can talk to the school and request this and as long as there is some documentation I don't see why he would not qualify based on what you described.

First set up an appointment with the specialist and principal at the school. It all begins with that conversation.

For my daughter her IEP means she gets several hours of more individualized attention which has really saved her in my opinion. She went from not being able to read to finally enjoying reading. She got into the "Wimpy Kid" books and just finally read her very first chapter book all by herself just a couple months ago (she is 10). It took her about a month to get through the book and she walked around with the copy of the book for about a week afterward because she was so proud. Needless to say I have bought a couple more of those books since then, even a new copy of one and I never buy new books. It was just something to really celebrate. Without that IEP in place I think she would have a much harder time in school and every day is a struggle regardless, so it is something I personally think is worth fighting for when a kid needs it.

Best of luck to you and your boy. Vanessa

My son was having all the same problems in school when he was in kindergarten. I was told that he was just young and he will outgrow it. When he got into first grade, he had an amazing teacher who thought I should talk to my son's doctor about ADHD. When we went for the appointment, they referred us to the Center for ADHD which was a few towns over. He was testing and three months later he was diagnosed with having ADHD. Three years later (he is in third grade now) he is doing better in school with the help of two drugs that he takes daily. He also goes to see the school's social worker twice a week during school. The school has been very supportive in this whole venture. His second grade teacher came up with the idea of doing a chart for him daily with a reward system. He gets a star in every subject if he completes the work and another one if he listens and pays attention. This has been a god-send because he has something to work towards and knows that he will be rewarded. It is a very obtainable reward and he choices the reward he wants to shoot for. It is 100% a solution, but he is involved in making his school day better. There are days where he only gets a few stars, but he then is reminded of what he will get if he improves.
Is there a center around where you live that specializes in ADHD?? If not, please e-mail me at amyc1012@aol.com and I can get you the number of mine. They may be able to get you more information or lead you to doctor's in your area that can help you in this "venture".
My son's school brought up the idea of an IEP at the end of the school year. They explained it as them being able to allow my son more assistance with every day learning such as reading. It will also allow him extra time when he takes the annual tests that the school gives every couple of years. It is free to parents and funded by the government. It is mostly offered to children who have a learning disability, ADHD, or who are disable.
Please let me know if I can be of any assistance to you in getting through this.

4|1|Ask for an IEP in Writing!!! m...|Isha|tm2ewing@sbcglobal.net|19:16:39|07/27/2010|

My dd13 got IEP in 1st grade. Don't just go talk to the principal/teacher etc, because they can blow you off, or try to convince you to do something else.

I would write a very nice letter that states very clearly that you want your son evaluated for an IEP. Be prepared to have documentation and if you can get a letter from a doctor diagnosing him with a disability they will not be able to deny him and IEP...

My thoughts on what you need to be prepared for if/when they approve the IEP (start researching now)...

#1 should be a behavior plan, that will keep (usually) him from getting suspended or sent home.
#2 figure out the goals you have for his education. Is he falling behind, why? and what supports would he need to help him progress.
#3 Would he benefit from a resource room, tutoring or special ed.
#4 What about an ED (emotionally disturbed) program, does your area offer that type of classroom? (this would fall under special ed).
#5 Would he benefit from an aide. So that he can have one on one time if needed, and she/he can keep him from disturbing others in the classroom.
#6 Does he struggle with testing? I'd ask for it to be modified... either no time limits, in a small group setting, etc...

Just remember you are your sons best advocate. Don't let the school push you around!

Can you tell I've been there done that lol...
