It's a very old quaint New England seaport. There are some nice areas to walk in and visit some shops and restaurants. Most of the area is just like any other town.

It is a good stopping point for a day or two but really the surrounding areas have more to do. If you want ocean beach then I suggest Hampton Beach NH or one of numerous beach areas on coastal Maine. If you are looking for something a little more woodsy I recommend the lakes region of NH like renting a place on the lake or on one of the lakes in Maine. There are also lots of other day trips in the NH lakes regions, you can hike the white mountains, there are lots of kid activities and the lakes are just beautiful.
