Do your research online, using any discounts you may have like AAA. Find the lowest price you can and write it down. Then call the hotel DIRECTLY (no 800 numbers, corporate call centers are not authorized to give the sweet discounts) and play dumb, being really polite and just ask if there are any manager's specials or deals going on...that you'd really love to stay there but are really on a tight budget. Call during down time, meaning from 3-5 or 9-10pm. If you are offered a rate that's more than what you saw online, mention that you saw a rate online of _ and you were wondering if there was any other promotion going on. Usually the front desk people want to bend to fill rooms, so you'll likely cash in. And niceness goes a long way..you catch a lot more flies with honey than vinegar y'know? ;)
