15 0|0|What do you think of the Kellogg's recall?|sunriver|sunriver@gmail.com|10:58:45|06/26/2010|

I'm curious about what you are thinking.
Kellogg's released very limited information yesterday about the recall of 28 million boxes of cereal. The cereal has "noxious odors and tastes off". Almost two dozen people have reportedly gotten ill after eating the recalled cereal, but other than saying that the package lining has "a waxy taste and off smell" consumers do not have much more information about the what/why behind this recall.

What do you think about that? Will you continue to buy Kellogg's cereals in say the next month, or is this going to make you pause? Do you have any of the recalled cereals in your home? How do you feel about this recall? I'd love to hear what you are all thinking. This topic interests me a lot and I don't have any real "offline" friends to dish with about it. 1|1|I dont have any Kelloggs cereals in the house right now (been using the $3/3 GM coupons like crazy), but I am suprised at the vagueness of the reasons for the recall.....it must be chemical, rather than organic contamination though from the little info they gave.|saint6811|waylan@comcast.net|11:09:23|06/26/2010|

It is so weird that they have not been more specific about cause or at the very least issued a statement about when they will have more information. I am confused by it. 2|1|Vanessa, what are the brands of recalled cereal? I didn't see this and it makes me a bit nervous.|Mackiesmudder|Mackiesmudder@aol.com|11:10:53|06/26/2010|

This goes to the Kellogg's consumer page:

The media statement was worded just a tiny bit different, but provided no other info to speak of. 4|2|Oh and whenever any of you see the words "voluntary recall" from now on...|sunriver|sunriver@gmail.com|11:23:29|06/26/2010|

I know that implies that there is such a thing as a "mandatory recall", wouldn't you think? In reality there is no such thing. All food recalls are voluntary because the FDA does not have the power to issue a mandatory recall. Isn't that something too?

I've been studying up on this stuff and it has been eye opening for me. 6|1|Gee whiz! They said they have identified a substance in the waxy liners that are causing the|Mackiesmudder|Mackiesmudder@aol.com|11:33:22|06/26/2010|

odor and the "off taste". I wonder if this is something new in the liners or have they been using this all along? Makes me wonder if it came from/made in China. Remember the pet food, paint for kids toys, milk and baby formula items that had substances from China in them that were recalled?
Thanks for the link, Vanessa. 8|2|Yeah, I wonder if they make those liners in China...|sunriver|sunriver@gmail.com|11:48:07|06/26/2010|

And what in the heck is in them that is making people sick? Any why?

Before I started covering recalls, I had no idea how many occurred. I've only been writing about them for about 2-3 months now and last month I finally did a compilation/recap of all of the major food recalls of the month and it was a wake up call for me. This month we saw a number of major brands and then of course in March there were nearly 200 over the HVP (http://www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/hvpcp/) alone. When I started covering them, I thought they were sort of boring to write about, but the more I learn about it I become even more committed to keep on top of them.

There is some legislation that is working it's way through I think it was the senate (I can't keep track-- I think it passed the house and has to clear the senate now) that would give the FDA more power, but regulation makes people nervous too.

It's all interesting anyway. 9|1|I just took my 13 boxes back to the store & got my money for them. They were pulling their boxes this am.|greenthumbs|greenthumbs@charter.net|14:29:06|06/26/2010|

But I just sent my sister 14 boxes yesterday but kept the boxes. Will call Monday. 10|2|They changed from the plastic-clear type bags to a foil/waxy type bag and apparently those are giving the cereal an "off" taste.|Barb09|Barb0969@AOL.com|23:44:55|06/26/2010|

I looked and looked and found no coupons for troll food......SO, I don't feed the trolls!! 11|3|I was just glad I didn't have any - though if they shipped in March, I know I'd bought and the kids had since eaten some Froot Loops. That's what's so bad - my kids may have already eaten some and I didn't know it. |Sara_s_Mom|IClipCoupons@gmail.com|10:26:09|06/27/2010|

12|1|Maybe it is me, BUT, if I had opened a box of cereal, and it had off odors, it would not have made it into my mouth. We do not like any of the kellogg's cereals anyway, it is all general mills. But, seriously, why would you eat it? When in doubt I ALWAYS throw it out. Then again, I an slightly more para noid than most. I think the people who ate it (or let kids eat it) likely have seasonal allergies and can't smell much of anything this time of the year. I know my allergies are in full swing and I am oblivious to smells so much so that I have to ask others for help in deciding if something is sour (like say, milk) because I can't smell much at all.
