Ok, I have to find a way to save more money on food and loose a few (!) pounds.

Looking at what I am spending, I see that we spend alot on meat. I normally buy ground beef, chicken thighs (w/skin that I remove), beef stew meat, and hot dogs/links. I probably spend about $40 a week on meat alone for a family of 5. My youngest already doesn't eat meat(except for spaghetti w/meat sauce).

Around this same time I starting thinking, you know, I'm really tired of chicken/hamburgers/hot links. So I just stopped eating it. It's been 2 weeks. I've been having beans, cheese, tortillas, fruit, salads, brown rice pasta w/sauce, cereal and veggies. It hasn't been too bad. I really think I can keep this up. I don't miss the meat at all.

I am thinking that as long as I don't buy "meat substitutes", my grocery bill should go down. So my question is, has anybody given up meat to save money? How's it working for you? Any meal ideas?

You can do that affordably by purchasing beans, quinoa, and dry TVP which you can rehydrate and use as meat in spaghetti, enchiladas, etc. 3|2|I have been vegan for 5 years i feel awesome|akgoods|akgoods@gmail.com|19:55:08|06/16/2010|

stir fries, sandwiches, salads. You can mash up extra firm tofu with some mustard, celery, pepper or whatever you want and turn it into an egg salad-type thing on sandwiches. You can do so many things with it. Recipe Zaar has really good ideas..just type in vegetarian or vegan for thousands of options.
