A couple weeks ago I let you all know my kitty had a large lump in his tummy. We brought him back today for follow up and the lump is about the size of his tummy. Could have been very bad news.
However, he went into surgery at 10:10 and by 10:25 one of the other vets in the office called me to let me know that the surgeon was pulling out pieces of a cardboard box and packaging tape. He said "you know, packaging tape like UPS uses" - I said, "Oh, I'm very familiar with it. Did you find any coupons in there?"
So, my kitty is eating the mail. It must have had catnip or something in a package to attract him.
So, now his little tummy which this morning was 90% filled with "something" will not be needing some food. He is a big boy - 17+ pounds, but this morning he was barely 13 pounds. It was so sad. I was so worried.
Well, he'll have an empty tummy and I'll have an empty bank account!!!

He had an ultrasound last week and they were pretty sure it wasn't cancer but the xrays and ultrasounds were very strange.
When we said goodbye to him this morning, I feared it was the last time and I didn't know how I was going to deal with that.
Now I have to figure out if he ate someone's coupon envie or a package in the mail. I'm going to have to tell him that is just wrong!!!
It's so scary. The package must have had something that attracted him -- something he could smell. I don't remember getting anything like a crunchy food sample or catnip -- well, how would I? He ate it!!!

It was a darn good thing it was still attached to a balloon, that was full of air, and scared the crap out of me, when it popped, or I have a feeling she would have eat the balloon as well. They both will rub on cardboard boxes and bite them....but the packing tape is like candy to one of them. We have to be sure to tear off ANY loose tape---can't leave any sticking off at angles (if it is flat on the box, she doesn't go after it). I'm thinking maybe the cardboard he ate was due to it being attached to the tape.
Easiest thing is to remove temptation and rid boxes of loose, hanging tape strands. We also put our rolls of tape up on a pegboard so the "girls" can't get to them. I'd love to tell you that we were able to train them to stay away from temptation, but instead WE'VE been trained to keep temptation out of their reach.

I've never seen him eat a box or lick tape or anything. OMG. Why would he? I just can't tell you how relieved I was to hear that's what it was -- although embarrassed that this ball of fur that I love more than live itself could do this without me knowing. Little goof ball.
He may be able to come home tomorrow. We'll see!!! I hope so. Since his tummy obviously hasn't been working completely, they have to monitor and make sure food goes in and food goes out.

My first kitty when I was a kid ate an entire ball of my mothers knitting yarn. Needless to say it got fully stuck inside and kitty had to have an operation to get it out.
A friends kitty ate a ball of string. It made it out just far enough that he had an extra tail. Someone had to take hold of the extra tail and it all came out. EEEWWWW!
My 2nd kitty loved to lick and eat photos (thank goodness what she chewed never got stuck). We have lots of family photos that have teeth marks on the corners and edges and kitty spit on them.
Cats eat very strange things.
I think they all LOVE cardboard, I have a co-worker that has a cat that hardly lets him unpack a box of stuff for work without being on it, in it or trying to destroy it and he says if he trys to take it away she gets MAD. But I've never known one to consume the tape too.

my mom was sewing on the couch while Christopher who was then a little baby was napping. He started to cry so she got up to get him and left the needle and sewing on the couch. The cat I guess wanted to eat the string attached to the needle and swallowed the whole thing. My mom comes back looking all over for the needle afraid the baby will somehow find it. Nothing. So whatever life goes on. Then that night the cat won't eat..is balled up in a corner and begins puking up bile. Just bile. gross. we took him to the vet and SURE ENOUGH on the xray there is that damn needle about to pierce his liver. Nice. So $1000 later the needle is out and thankfully the cat was fine. But $1000!!!!! My mom felt so bad she paid the bill but who would think an animal would swallow a needle in a matter of minutes that it took for her to get up, get the baby and come back.

I went to visit him this afternoon. He was pretty mad at me at first. But after about 5 minutes of him running around the room, I scooped him up in his blanky and sat with him on my lap, talking to him and patting him. After a few minutes, he fell asleep and snored while I rocked him. He loves being rocked. We did that for about 40 minutes. I'm sure the drugs helped calm him down! He is staying tonight. They are going to try to get him to eat tonight and if he does, tomorrow he comes home!!! She now gets a soft food diet (though she still steals kibble from the other cat and just swallows it whole). Course she was already missing quite a few teeth from her life as a stray before we got her. I don't recall the bill for the teeth but I think he cut us a break since this SAME cat had surgery to remove bladder stones. Needless to say, we paid a good portion of a child's tuition this year in vet bills.
Oh yeah----- ya gotta also watch them with rubber bands. After having to "pull one out" of a cat's tushie when he couldn't poop it all the way out, we learned to NEVER leave them in cat's reach. That was just plain GROSS!!!

He came home tonight. It was touch and go for part of the day because he had a low-grade fever earlier today. He let us know for a couple hours that he was NOT happy with us, but about an hour ago, he hopped up on my lap and started to purr!!!
