THE STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN

Some of the servants told Rebekah that Esau was threatening to kill his brother. She called Jacob to her, and she said: "Your brother is planning to murder you. Now flee away to my brother Laban at Haran, and stay there until your brothers anger cools, and then I will send for you."

So Jacob said good-by to his father and mother. All his crafty plans had come to nothing. All the wealth of his father he was leaving behind, and it seemed that his brother would get it all. But the blessing of his father he carried with him. He thought he might never see his father again, but he hoped to come back to his mother. In fact just the opposite happened; for when Jacob did come back, twenty years later, his father was still living, but his mother was dead.

Jacob went on his way with a heavy heart. His sin rose up before him, and he felt he could not look up to God. When night came, he lay down on the ground, taking a stone for a pillow.

But as in sorrow he slept, God brought to him a beautiful and comforting dream, a vision. He saw a ladder or stairway, starting on the Earth and reaching into Heaven. And on that stairway he saw bright angels going up and coming down. And then he heard the voice of God, who stood over him, and said; "I am the Lord, the God of your father Abraham and of Issac. The land on which you lie I am going to give you and your descendants. I will be with you on your journey, and guard you, and I will bring you back. I will never forsake you."

Then Jacob awoke. It was still night, and the stars were shining in the sky, the stars which he remembered his granfather Abraham had watched as God promised him that his descendants should be as many as the stars of Heaven.

Jacob said:"Surely the Lord must be in this place, and I did not know it. Oh, what an awesome place this is! It is nothing less than the house of God, and this is the gate of Heaven."

So he called the place Bethel, which means "house of God." And Bethel was ever afterwards its name.

Then Jacob went on his way, a forgiven and blessed man.
