My mom broke her shoulder this weekend and is having surgery today. I don't know how much more her body can take. She was already having trouble with her right arm mobility and now this happened to her left arm.

She proceeded to fall right after she came home! (She said she didn't think she hurt herself though, praise the Lord). Between her Parkinsons and the pain meds, she was very confused and unsteady. She kept repeating the same things and getting confused in her mind.

Went in Tuesday for surgery and came home on Wednesday. I wish hospitals (or insurance companies) weren't in such a hurry to press some patients out the door. I realize the financial weight on hospitals these days, but someone her age doesn't bounce back too quickly. Especially with the parkinson's, makes her more unsteady on her feet.
What really shocked me most was when she initially broke her shoulder and she went up to the hospital and was back home in just a few hours. I thought they would have kept her overnight.
lauren 15|5|Geez, that is realllly fast even for pushing her out the door! Did she have a pinning or what? Also, did they talk to you about therapy benefits under Medicare Part B? She would definitely qualify for that....she could have out-patient, or if there is no one to drive her to and from the appointments, they can do home sessions. It would benefit her in her functioning with the fracture and restrictions on that joint/arm, and also they could evaluate her on steadiness of stance and gait, as well as cognitive functioning.....if she doesnt have it set up yet, call the doc on Tues and ask him to write an order for a PT/OT eval, and have the doctor's office set it up for her. My dad's handling the therapy part. She was actually supposed to be starting therapy this week for her OTHER arm, so I'm sure they'll just change it around so that the therapy starts for both arms. My dad is going to therapy (still) for his hip, so they'll probably just coordinate their therapies for the same time.
She was having some pain the last time I was over there, but at least she was trying to push through it and move her arm some per docs orders.
Stinks to be old!
