25 0|0|My first OBGYN appointment - Have to see more specialist! (M)|RobinsCrazyWorld|robinmarie72@gmail.com|01:37:44|05/14/2010|
Posted on May-14-10 at 01:37 AM (Eastern) by 24.20.40.237

The ultra sound was soooo amazing! Saw arms, legs, somersaults, a tummy, head and a crazy heart beat
Was shocked at what all can be seen in a baby that is only 2 inches long!!

The neck area looked great. This is something I was nervous about. A week from now we should have all the results and a number that will tell the risk of birth defects (mainly downs syndrome) They take the ultra sound, my blood work from today, my age (37) and someone come up with a number using that info. I go back in 4 weeks and already have a amneo (sp) scheduled. Now i am not at all sure if I will have it or not, but they wanted to have it set up in case I so decide to have it. I guess I will have to see what my risk is and go from there. I really don't want to have one.

My appointment lasted almost hours! I was exhausted when I was done and didn't make any calls... I had 2 anxious grandmas and 1 adopted grandma calling me this evening wanting to know EVERYTHING... Oh, everyone thinks it is a boy. LoL

Now I have more people to add to this experience...
1.A new neurologist (switched insurance and my old one is no longer covered) to monitor that aspect of things.
2.A pain management clinic because they don't want me on any meds. Tylenol does nothing for me and that is all I am allowed.
3.I have to a new digestive health clinic to watch my nutrition since I have special needs (old doctor is not covered under new insurance as well)
4. I forget what they are called, but someone to watch my blood for clots since I have a history of them. If I didn't want to go through this I would have to give myself ingections every night as a precaution. I would rather get checked out every so often and wait and see then do the shots which have their own set of issues.

I was worried that I was giving to much wait. I guess i hadn't gained as much as I thought. I am only up 3 pounds since my last weigh in about 3 months ago. I am just showing more then a first time mom usually shows at this point.

So everything looks good so far, but we still have a lot of unknowns. It sounds like it will be week 18-20 before we will have a good idea what is up. That is unless I do the test in weeks.... But they say even that isn't even 100% so...

There are risks with an amneio, but I think the benifits outweigh the risks.

i realize that it can offer an insight of there is something wrong with the baby but the test can also cause lots of problems. a normal sonogram can detect lots of problems and are a lot safer.

Remember your manners: when god answers your prayers----- say thank you. 11|3|My neice was 35 when she became pregnant & of course they wanted the tests,|mo6g02|crazylady47952@yahoo.com|14:15:56|05/16/2010|

they opted not to have them done either since they said it wouldn't make a difference in how they felt. To each their own, but I feel that if you don't care what they say, then don't have them. It's not going to make a difference in how you love them anyway, so it's just another big expense that you can live without. Why find out that maybe something's wrong & worry your self crazy for months when it's not going to change anything anyways. Just be happy & do what you feel is the correct thing for you & it will be right no matter what anyone else says or thinks. It's your child & you & yours must make what decisions are right for you. Just because they were right for someone else doesn't make them right for you. Good luck. Everything will be okay no matter what happens, just love each other & this baby & whatever God gives you, it will be a blessing.

If you are prone to the possibility of still births or miscarriages, then I'd say it's worth it to find out if the baby can possibly even survive outside the womb. If it is not a "viable" pregnancy, I DO understand not putting your body and emotions through the strain and stress anymore than you have to.

I know people with 2 kids.....over 10 years apart....who miscarried AT LEAST once in every year in between---and a few before the birth of their first child. That included one totally full term birth...labor and delivery...and the child never drew breath. This was actually BEFORE amnios were around, but they had the ultrasounds. So there are times when I'd say the benefits outweigh the risks.

Although it is really such a personal and heart wrenching decision that has to be made by the parents to be. With that said as someone who lost a baby at full term to stillbirth, I chose to NOT have amnio with each of my next two girls. I lived those risks. Both girls were healthy (although Mads had some minor heart problems she outgrew and Miss G is of course a wonderful holy terror some days... thankfully!

And breathing, the heart, the brain and limbs etc can all be seen on a sonogram. Every time or ANY time some is pregnant there is always a risk. I just don't understand taking a test that causes an ADDITIONAL risk to the baby.

First of all I would like to say congratulations :) I had been away from the board awhile and didn't know you are expecting :)

When I was pregnant for my daughter, they did all the blood tests and all that. Then told me that the number basically guaranteed that she would be born with downs syndrome. They scheduled me for an ultra sound to take measurements and offered me the amnio. The ultra sound showed that her measurements appeared normal, but they said that they couldn't guarantee me anything based on that. I chose not to have the amnio done, despite the numbers saying she would have downs syndrome my perfectly normal, healthy baby girl is turning 8 in August.
I am so glad I did not risk the amnio, to have an answer that would not have changed my decision, because I would have kept her no matter what it said.

For me, age & health issues were not a factor, but the numbers still said she would not be normal. She is perfectly normal despite the numbers.

It is your choice to do what feels right for you, and in my opinion, based on my own experience, if you will be keeping the baby no matter what numbers say, it just isn't worth the risk.

I hope things continue to go well for you, and I hope you and baby have a healthy and safe pregnancy :) 24|2|I wouldn't have the amnio either..........|KellyJef|burke3536@yahoo.com|08:13:08|05/18/2010|

They wanted to do an amnio with my daughter because the doctors feared she might not have limbs:( But we felt the same way you do: we were having her no matter what the amnio might show so why have it?

Actually, the doctors recommended a therapeutic abortion.

We trusted the Lord to give us a healthy baby. Kelly graduated from high school without missing a SINGLE DAY of school in 13 years -- that's how healthy she is!!!

It's so hard not to worry, but you have a great attitude so I think you'll be fine :)

and was also asked to take the amnio test which I refused. According to my gyno, having a baby after 35 puts you in a higher risk which I think is bunk unless you have health problems that may put your pregnancy in a higher risk situation. Sometimes I feel all these different tests, etc., they want you to take is just too much, some are risky (possible miscarriage) as well as another money-making scam as these tests are not cheap by a long shot! - this is my personal opinion, so no attacks please - Thank you!
