Excess Access, a non-profit organization that's been in existence since 1998, finds uses for certain materials. Through them, there is RIGHT NOW a call for pet and human hair (and used but clean nylons). They are being used to essentially make sponges to absorb the oil from the Gulf spill. Register with them and they'll tell you where to send everything.

The call for pet and human hair donations is legit. Pass this on to all your pet groups and any hairdressers you know. And then go brush.
