after the last couple years of sporadic insomnia becoming increasingly more frequent, especially the last 6 months or so, I have decided to swallow my pride and go see the doctor for some help. I have been researching Rozerem, it's non-narcotic, non-habit forming, works specifically for getting to sleep so the med doesnt stay in the system long thus no groggy or foggy head in the morning. If anyone has any experience with Rozerem, I'd appreciate some input....going to see the doc today for a Rx, I've got to do something.....3-4 hrs of sleep 5 or 6 days a week isnt cutting it anymore.

I have no trouble staying asleep once I fall asleep....only problem is I have to get up at 430am for work, and if I dont fall asleep by midnight, I get increasingly anxious and that only adds to the insomnia. I go to bed between 9 and 930, have tried earlier and later over the years to see if that is the problem with no different results. It's affecting my concentration and I really feel it's affecting my overall health now. I've tried so many things over the years to solve this problem, to avoid taking a medication for sleep, I dont take medication of any kind except for ibuprofen occassionally.

Anyone take this? How does it work for you? Any side effects that you can't tolerate? TIA for any input.
Joy

There's an natural alternative you can try as well - Valerian Root. I use this when I have trouble sleeping, stressed, etc., and it really works. Also gave to my one daughter who had problems with grinding her teeth while sleeping and it has helped her tremendously. Several health, vitamin website carry Valerian Root. HTH, Sharon:)

I have had insomnia for as long as I can remember,i tried ambien, lunesta, and a few others but not rozerem (My insurance at the time would not cover it) But my problem wasnt staying asleep, it was falling asleep. Sometimes you think too much when trying to fall asleep, they put me on Xanax at bed time and now I sleep like a baby! Talk to your dr and see what they tell you. GL I know how much it sucks to not sleep well and have to work, it is horrid.

This will go on for months at a time. Most of that time will be me not being able to sleep at all. They tried me on one med but it gave me the crazy legs something bad so I couldn't take it. I have tried everything over the counter and by rx. Nothing works for me. It is annoying. Been like this since my teens.

Or there are nights I dont go to sleep till 3 am, wake up at 5 then get up at 6;30, or even better, dont fall asleep till 5 then get up at 6;30. One of these will happen nightly until Im just so run down (usually after a week or so) and I just crash. Then for a night or two I sleep good and then go back to one or all of the above until I crash again. Dad tells me to take a shot of nyquil but I hate taking any meds, let alone ones I dont need. He's been put on sleeping meds and they dont work for him but the nyquil does. Strange. lol

I have horrible insomnia, but I really don't want to take any narcotics for sleep. I've always been a nightowl, but not to the point where I can get any sleep. I've tired different things myself and nothing seems to work. The past 10 years I've learned to live on only a few hours of sleep a day. If you find anymore info on that med you were talking about, please let me know. Hugs, Rebekka

and sew or read a book...I finally crash on a good day around 6 a.m....on a bad day around 8 a.m....I take naps in the afternoon...even for a hour helps...I think it is because my mind is always going...thinking of things I need to do, new things I want to make...etc...and stress days makes it even worse where I find myself sleeping for 2 hours and than up for 4 or more hours before I can sleep again...crazy!!! I don't want to be on medication either so I just deal with it.I've always been a night person...had jobs 2nd shift and got used to staying up late...but was always able to sleep...now no...can't sleep.

I find that I have to really unwind and try to RELAX until I am drowsy. Then head for bed.

But I also have sleep apnea, so the only way that I get any RESTFUL sleep, is by using a CPAP machine. Nowadays there are sleep clinics, and you can have a "sleep study" done. That may really help. It is VERY important that your body gets enough regenerative RESTFUL sleep. You are right, lack of sufficient sleep, especially over time, can affect many of your bodies functions. Please DO see your doctor soon.

Best of luck

I like so many other have have the same problem, you would think I was a rocket scientist with as much as my brain wants to work when its time for bed, but ask the darn thing to work during the day and its napping then!! Anyway I haven't heard of that medication, and it sounds like you have tried several things/methods to try and fall asleep, my only few suggestions would be one, have you tried a benedryl, every now and then when I am tired but know I am not going to sleep I take one of those and it does seem to help. Second, if you get the scrip for the sleeping med, start taking it when you have a day or two off, a few years ago my dco put me on something (I can't remember the name off hand, will have to look) but honestly for me it didn't work so great but once I did fall asleep I had the hardest time getting up (way worse than usual) I literally could hardly move, I was very groggy and just could not function. It did get a little better within a few days, but eventually I decided taking the med was not for me. I'm sure it will help you, just wanted to let ya know what I went through the first couple of days.

Have a good one :)

Cheri 25|4|Cheri, I am immune to Benadryl....I can take sinus meds and not get sleepy, so I never tried that, seemed like a moot point, lol. It is very frustrating not to be able to get your rest, & no, it's not good for your health as the body & brain need that "down" time.
I went thru similar years back, got to the point where I just dreaded night time cuz I knew I wouldn't be able to get to sleep, & IF I did finally fall asleep, I'd either have nightmares or simply wake up & not be able to fall back to sleep.
I can't take sleep meds of any kind & nothing else I tried worked very well (exercising earlier in the day, relaxing bath an hour or 2 before bed, avoiding anything w/caffeine after 6pm....). But, I love to read & have always read in bed at night. The thing was, I needed to read something mindless, something to help me "blank" out my mind. The Stephen King, etc. type books &/or computer mags I love to read do NOT help blank out my mind. LOL Crossword or wordsearch puzzles are a definite NO too cuz they stimulate your brain & your don't want that when you're trying to relax & fall asleep. I started reading those silly rag mags, like the National Enquirer, Globe, etc. They don't require alot of brain cells to absorb the info but they do help take my mind off the things going around in my head, things I think about that I want/need to do the next day, this or that project, worries, etc. That & snacking on cashews, which contain manganese & magnesium & are natural relaxants, has seemed to help alot. Now I look forward to going to bed & am out w/in a half hour most nights. :) It takes some time & work to get used to blanking out your mind at 1st but it did finally work for me. I think the key was focusing my mind on something else, something mindless/boring so the other thoughts are blocked out, kwim?
You can also try focusing your mind on your toes & then slowly work your way up thru your body, repeatedly thinking to yourself about how each part is beginning to relax, & then is relaxed, as you go along. I did this at 1st, before I discovered the rag mags., & it did finally help but took some practice, to get used to it.
This isn't a dig against the male species but I think women have more trouble w/insomnia than men, & I think it's because we tend to worry more but we also seem to have more responsibilities (housework, kids, bills, etc.) at home on top of work outside the home. And I think most men are lucky enough to be gifted w/the uncanny ability to put things out of their minds easier than women, that "1-track mind" ability. Ever notice how when they're watching a football game, etc. they seem to be able to block out the whole rest of the world, don't hear the phone, the doorbell or the kids? How the kids can be writing all over the walls & furniture w/permanent marker or sidewalk chalk, right in front of dad, while dad is doing some paperwork at the dining table or watching golf, football, etc. on tv & doesn't see a thing the kids are doing? Men are programmed differently than women so most men, not all but most, are able to go to bed & almost immediately drop off to a sound sleep, because their mind is focused on just 1 thing while women usually have so many different things going thru their minds at any given time.
Sorry this is so long. LOL
