Some of you know about Hallies constant summertime battle with eczema... well, it never went completely away this winter, sort of went dormant and didn't bother her, but it was there... We went to the park this weekend where they had just mowed a couple days ago, and totally forgot about the eczema issue, and yesterday she was sitting in the grass playing... this morning when she got up, her face and eyes were swelled, the eczema was welted under her arms, in the elbows, between the legs, behind the knees.... Bless her heart, I felt sooo bad for her. I think it may be time to go through the official allergy testing and get her started on shots. Anyone have experience with this? Yay? Nay? Negatives? I'm not sure what else our options are, it covers such a huge area of her body, I can't keep putting the steroid cream on it day after day. I hate to get her addicted to Benadryl again. Help me out here, convince me this is the right thing to do.

Thanks!
Jessica

My husband, myself & 2 daughters went for allergy tests years ago and took allergy shots for 4-5 years which has helped us tremendously. We all suffered from seasonal, hay fever allergies, tree/grass pollen, dust mites, cigarette smoke, etc. Each year when allergy season comes we don't suffer like we used to which is a big plus. The tests are expensive, so hopefully you have insurance to cover this. HTH, Sharon:) 3|2|I think my insurance will cover it, I know the shots are covered 100%. I'll have to check on the testing.|jsevier|asevier@twlakes.net|20:24:12|04/12/2010|

I looked into shots about 20 years ago, and they wanted me to come so often that I just couldn't have kept to the schedule in order to complete the regimen.

When we first started getting the shots, went 3x a week for about 3 months, then down to 2x a week for another 3-4 months, then once a week, then every other week for the rest of 4-5 years depending how well your body responds to these shots, breathing test every 4 months, how you're progressing, etc. Also, every year had to have repeat allergy tests as well as new serum for the next year. 6|5|After more research...... She actually has Atopic Dermatitis, so I'm not sure the shots would help.... Argh!!!|jsevier|asevier@twlakes.net|05:56:43|04/13/2010|

My dd is allergic to almost everything (trees, grasses, mold, pets, pollen) and she takes allergy shots. It hasn't been too bad for her. In the beginning she went 1X a week every week (any day, as long as we came every week). Then before we moved we were on once a month schedule. We were 1 1/2 years into it but since we moved we see a new Dr and he took all the tests again and will start the shots again from the beginning. That I am annoyed about, but understand that each clinic uses their own supply and supplier, thus your system needs to be built up again.

Since the Dr did allergy tests again we just found out she is not allergice to cats anymore. So I think the tests are worth it. By the time we're done, she should be symptom-free.

Someone I know has a daughter who gets eczema bad in the spring. The doc suggested allergy meds that she should try to start before all the pollen comes out. Also, strong hydrocort cream really helped.

I used to be allergic to just about everything - cats, pollen, ragweed, trees, grass, weeds, hay, cows, dust, mold, apple peelings & oranges, even my own hair follicles & the sun (I'm still allergic to penicillin & doxicycline/tetracycline). I'd be miserable as soon as the snow melted in the spring & all thru to fall til the 1st hard frost. :( I never had any testing done but started getting an allergy shot at the beginning of every March. I'd only have 1 shot but got it every year for about 5 yrs. & it sure made summer more bearable & enjoyable. Cats still bother me if I'm around them long enough but I'm otherwise pretty much allergy free altho I do now have asthma. I don't know if it was the shots, if I grew out of it or if it was due to seeing a chiropractor, maybe a combo of the 3, but I now look forward to spring & summer w/only an occasional sneeze. :)
