13 0|0|Anyone got anything to offer on developmental questions?|glennie58|glenn_scott@alumni.ksg.harvard.edu|16:43:22|04/01/2010|

We tell ourselves that Dashi is around 4 developmentally though he is doing 1st grade math and is learning to read and does art like a whiz

lately I can't leave him alone for a minute unless he gets into something, also the scissors thing and yesterday I had a cup of apple juice and got a cup of coffee and fell asleep (I go in for the part of the sleep study next week where they put the thing over your face thank goodness they found that I have apnea I have been going crazy lol)

anyways he mixed my coffee and apple juice in both cups, and when I looked at my cofee I thought the coffeemate had separated but ooooh it was disgusting and the apple juice too, he was so happy to tell me - boy for the days when he couldn't talk or was unable to pay attention to anything outside of himself lol. I take this as great progress due to therapy etc but we never expected to have to childproof the house and I am struggling with this now at both his advanced age and mine!

He told me yesterday that he will be 7 soon so he is almost an adult, it was all I could do not to ROFL but he was so serious... I am so happy that he is responsive and is actually talking now and not just parroting things or repeating what he has heard on TV, he has made some leap, crossed some milestone lately but I am so tired... I looked all over the house yesterday, talking with him constantly as I always have, telling him what I was doing, asking if he saw a book... discovered it in his 'tableau' of a train wreck late last night and he KNEW I was looking for it. (If you don't know these kids can be so bright, he gets out his Thomas sets or his geotrack sets and stages the entire apartment in different accidents and things, using all kinds of things as ramps (the bill of a hat for instance) or accident wreckage (beads from his therapy beading, I put these away they hurt too much when you step on them, and the rice takes forever to get out of the rug but it makes nice 'snow' lol.

So the question is at what developmental age do kids do this kind of thing, is he really 5? LOL If he is this would be great news... I am hoping this time of homeschooling has given him the time he needs to feel safe and grow and not be afraid of everything... he was not able to keep up in school with the teacher he had for first grade... he was regressing, potty accidents every day (never before then, being scared, getting sick all the time, he was stressed out... and he finally admitted to me yesterday that he could read after months of saying he couldn't do it every single time we open a book.... 1|1|Dashi's calendar age is older due to the autism|glennie58|glenn_scott@alumni.ksg.harvard.edu|16:45:52|04/01/2010|

these tricks are getting harder and harder to take... trying to figure out if it's a new developmental stage or unexpressed anger.... 4|1|Glennie, do you have access to the educational co-op for your county? I think I remember you homeschool, Dash, right? The co-op will have educational professionals that could help answer your questions :)|saint6811|waylan@comcast.net|12:45:49|04/03/2010|

I'm just not sure. It sounds like he has come a long way and I can totally relate to your concerns about feeling older (and tireder yourself). Does he have a doctor that you trust? Are there any support services in your area that you were holding off using?

It sounds like he is a very creative kid and I know that also goes hand in hand with Autism, or seems to anyway.

I wish I knew for you. I hope you find the answers you are seeking.

When my sons like that were older they were insanely creative like that. Razors.. omw if I could tell you how many times we had to find harder places to hide them. If we hid them high my two sons both at different stages would climb to get them they thought razors made great space ships. Coat hangers made great airplanes... scissors he'd cut up crayons and anything else not nailed down. I remember once one of them cut my cell phone charger cord. Vacuum cleaner tub, anything he could find became something different.

we have had years of therapies and consultations and meetings and learning and coaching and more therapy.
lately the ladies at TEACCH have been great, we go on mondays, they love him and he loves them, he even
promised to email one of the ladies if he needs her help, a huge breakthru for him, to understand that he
can ask for and receive help and not have a tantrum lol 12|1|Glennie, check this out. AMC and the Autism Society have teamed up for Movies for Kids with Austism. Link inside.|Ranalt|ainebailey@gmail.com|21:12:06|04/08/2010|
