THE LAMB.....PROMISE OF GOD
God is love. Everything that He does is done in love, because that is His nature. Satan, the devil, is hatred. Everything he does is done in hate, because that is his nature.
Love will conquer hate, and in the end there will be nothing but love. But it takes a long time to do this. It has taken six thousand years so far: but the time is almost finished that hatred shall rule in the world. God made a plan to conquer hate as soon as sin and death came into the world through Adam and Eve. Indeed, He made the plan even before that, from the foundation of the world; for God is never caught unready. He knows all things beforehand and is always ready to meet them. Now He asks you and me to help Him in this war, through the love He gives us.
Satan was not always Satan.. God created him pure and good before He made this world. His name was Lucifer, which means "Light bearer." He was the highest angel in heaven, the brightest and the wisest and the most beautiful. But sin started with him. He became proud because of his beauty. Then he thought he should be as high as God and the Son of God. He got some of the angels to side with him and they rebelled against God.
So there was war in heaven; but Lucifer with all the angels was cast out, and his name became Satan, which means "enemy." And he was also named the devil, which means "the evil one." He made up his mind to conquer this world as soon as it was made. And this he did by capturing Adam and Eve.
First he captured the serpent, which yielded itself to him. When the serpent tempted Eve, it was the devil in the serpent that dids it. So ever since then the serpent has been the sign of Satan, and sometimes he is called that old serpent, and the dragon. The dragon was a kind of serpent. When God condemned the serpent to lose his wings and to crawl on the ground, his wings were only gradually lost. Finally they were all lost, so that now there was no winged serpent, but only snakes. But for awhile the serpent kept some stubby wings, though they could not lift him above the ground. And one kind of serpent. the mean dreadful kind, was the dragon, which had a heavy body and stubby wings, and sometimes is said to have had more than one head. So, though long ago the dragon and all winged serpents were destroyed in the flood, the dragon remained in men's stories, and the devil is called the dragon and the great red dragon.
But the sign of God is something very different. It is a lamb. The lamb is the baby of the sheep, and nothing can be more mild and peaceable and good than a lamb. We would hardly expect a lamb to conquer a dragon, would we? And so we might think, too, that love, which is sweet and good, could not conquer hate, which is so fierce and bad. But love wil conquer hate, and the Lamb will conquer the dragon.
