I watched some of it its about some chef Jamie something or other that is trying to change the eating habits of kids/people, Huntington is suppose to be unhealthiest city in the usa.last night he was trying to use fresh ingredients in school lunches and get the kids to eat them and not having a lot of luck also it cost more so not sure if the school would go for it, if you get a chance watch it. He was showing these kindergartners different veggies and they didn't know what a potato or tomato was, there was also a family they were trying to get to change the son was 14 or so and very over weight as was the mom and dad he took them to the dr and the son had high blood sugar and was on his way to being a diabetic and other health problems, when I go to my grandson high school I have been noticeing all the over weight kids seems like half or more are now, something does need to be done its not just the schools we all eat way too much take out and junk,Linda 1|1|I missed it, but I saw Jamie and Ryan on Larry King the other night talking about it~*~|RebekkaVA|queen_vulture@msn.com|18:29:08|03/27/2010|

I work in a school cafeteria. And I know in our school system we have a very strict menu that we follow. All of our rice is brown, pizza is on a whole wheat crust, we offer fresh fruits n veggies everday and we do not give pizza for breakfast all of our breads are wheats and whole grains most of the food we serve to our kids are not prepackaged foods they are made in our kitchen from scratch.

I can understand why the cafeteria workers would be defensive because they probably dont make the menu and dont have much say over what they can order or what they can serve. Do they get government commodities to use or do they get government money to buy there products for there lunches? It does make a differance which one you get. We get government commodies and its usually pretty nice stuff that we get from them however if they get money then that county can pretty much buy what they want with that money.

our only prepackaged food is chicken nuggets and things like that and none of our food is fried its all oven baked our milk is 1% milk and skim milk. I really think it varies what state or area you are in as to where and what your kids eat in the cafeteria. We only serve desserts on fridays and they are reduced sugar chocolate chip cookies and ice cream.

I always come to bat when it comes to school lunches because not all school lunch programs are bad. I am proud to work for the county that I work for and I am proud to be a "lunch lady".

But they love it, however my kids school also has pop tarts and hot pockets and stuff all the time for breakfast. My kids hate most of this stuff and I'd rather they eat cereal at home. I guess they figure any breakfast is better than none, because all breakfasts are free. There are also large differences in income here. People either make a lot of money or are really having trouble getting by... I think they are trying to reach out to the families who work and don't have money for food. Because the school is always giving away food to families in need.
