Debating on getting a dog. We are in a tiny house with two cats and seven kids. Are we nuts?? The kids really want one and this has been for the past two years plus. With all our moves we just never felt it was time. Money was impossibly tight the past two years with moving back and forth and two houses. I just don't want to make a mistake or do something we regret. Someone is offering us a scottish terrier mix and I'm wondering if we are stupid for thinking about it. We know nothing about that breed.

Second, with all the kids in your house. The dog will get TONS of attention, and plenty of play time, so wouldn't worry to much about the house being small. Remember my friend has 5 boys,. also in a small house, with TWO BIG DOGS, and a stuck up cat(I love cats).|dlpavitt|dlpavitt@att.net|21:10:21|03/20/2010|

alot of shelters (good ones) will know the animal andhelp you pick the right one for you. It would be sad to bring the dog into your home and he/she be overwhelmed, or testy around the cats and/or children and then he/she has to go back and the dog is hurt and the kids are hurt and you feel awful.

Definitely study the breed but dogs are like people. They all have a past..esp a stray. It helps to work with someone who knows the dog. 3|2|Good advice so far....the only dogs we've ever had, we got as adult dogs.....I always ask for full disclosure about bad habits, personality, etc....some things are manageable and re-trainable, some arent....ask if there is any way you can do a 'trial' with the dog first, say for a week, before committing to taking him for good.|saint6811|waylan@comcast.net|22:12:01|03/20/2010|

Bringing a dog into a house with 7 new people and 2 cats in a small house (where it probably wouldn't have much chance to "get away" from the chaos) could be way too much for a lot of dogs.

I agree with doing a trial run with the dog to see if it's a good match for your household. 5|4|Is there someone that has a dog you could dog sit for a few days? |Sara_s_Mom|IClipCoupons@gmail.com|14:39:23|03/21/2010|

We had 2 cats and 1 dog in a 1400 sf house. Kind of small. Cats seem to need their personal space more than dogs. Our biggest problem w/our dog was that we had to board her when we went away. She never really liked that and didn't do well with that (not eating, etc.). Boarding can get expensive if you travel a lot too. But at least with cats, you can fill their food, water, clean the box and go away over night without too much fuss.

Highly recommend trying to find a pet sitting buddy :) My neighbor and I trade off and it has been a great time and money saver for us both.

If the dog wasn't brought up around kids and cats I wouldn't do it. Here is some info I found online.

Look at this link under Temperament.

I wasn't comfortable with the breed and we travel more in the summer and fall than any time of the year. I'd rather wait until after our yearly vacations before we do something like this.

I have some experience w/a couple different types of Terriers & they can be high-energy dogs & a little snippy if not raised from puppyhood w/small children & other pets. And they can be very stubborn w/a mind of their own. LOL
I've had 2 Chihuahua/Rat Terrier crosses (currently have one of these) & a purebred Yorkie. The Chihuahua/Terriers were/are snippy & were/are NOT good w/kids under 16-17 yrs. as the dogs sense the children's natural & innocent unpredictability w/flailing arms & legs, romping around, etc. & do not tolerate that very well at all. They're also very temperamental dogs. The Yorkie wasn't quite as snippy but she was very high-energy & definitely had a mind of her own - she would not train to go outside for potty for nothing & would stand in the same spot on the lawn for 2 hrs., stiff as a board. LOL I don't know if this is true for all Terrier (my "pet" name for them is Terror. LOL) types or not but just my experience w/Rat T's & Yorkies. My one next door neighbor's daughter has a purebred Brat Terrier & my nickname for it is White Lightning cuz despite being spayed, she loves to just tear a$$ all over the place every chance she gets, & is quicker & slicker than a greased pig when she does. LOL Been a few times I've been out trying to help them catch the dog which snuck out & took off like a shot down the road. LOL The daughter has 3 young kids tho (the youngest is in Pre-school) & White Lightning seems to do really well w/those kids, likely cuz they got her as a puppy.
I just wanted to add that I've also had a purebred Chihuahua & a Chihuahua/Pekingese cross & neither of those 2 were quite as snippy/temperamental as the Chihuahua/Terriers. The Chihuahua/Pekingese was actually very easy-going, great w/kids & wouldn't hurt a fly. We got him when he was just 3 mos. old & my son was 1 yr. old so that may have made the difference, plus, I did Daycare w/small kids for several yrs. Pekingese is also a mellower breed.
I've loved each & every one of the precious little pistols like crazy, spoiling them something terrible to boot, but I understand & respect the fact that they all simply haven't been good around children. ;)
