My team at work is really into Farmville and at first I wasn't crazy about it, but then I realized it's a teambuilding tool and as long as it doesn't interfere with work, I'm okay with it. They typically catch up during lunch time.
I resisted Farmville because I saw where it is time specific for some things and I can't do that. Zoo was a better compromise.
You CAN, however, turn off those alerts from your friends if you don't want to see them. Across from their name will see the word "hide" Click on it and pick to hide the application.
