My 13 year old has allergy induced asthma and is on zyrtec, varimyst and advair. The problem is that she does not take her perscriptions as she should. She will miss a day or two or more, or not take at consistant times. She argues with me about this all the time. She doesn't want me giving it to her daily but yet she can't do it herself. This is stemming from feeling upset/stressed/annoyed with having these issues in the first place. She hates having to deal with being 'sick', being different (none of her friends have any issues) and having to take allergy shots (monthly) on top of her daily medicines.

I have told her that if she takes these meds as perscribed they will greatly reduce her 'sick'days, that this can be controlled. I also tried to make it clear that its important that she does this or she could have a severe attack. Every year about this time, she gets a cold that triggers a flair up. We end up in urgent care having a nebulizer treatment and it all becomes real to her. But then when she's better, its back to the fight.

We have talked to her dr about this and he told her the same things, but still she fights it.

Has anybody dealt with a stubborn kid and got them to see clearly?

best thing do not fight with her,, let her see how sick she gets without taking her meds daily,, then try to encourage her and also by educating her friends about her medications and conditions sometimes peers play a bigger role in a child's decision then a grown up does, they look at us as the boring stupid adults ;) just wait till they are older and get the same from their children looool

or then there is the choice to see if the school nurse can embarrass her by calling her out of class to take her meds couple of choices there but she might hate u if u have the nurse call her out of class in front of her friends looool

this is why we have white hair,, the pressures of life 2|2|Thank you for replying. Arguing never does any good-just makes the kid more determined! I decided this morning to hand her the meds with breakfast and just be non-confrontational about it. .|hudge4|hudge95@yahoo.com|19:33:47|03/04/2010|

just doesn't seem strong enough...but she coughs every singe day...just wondering about the shot, if that's something i should look into for her.

Tina, I'm sorry you're going through this...both my kids have asthma so I feel your pain....

Devon (15) was 2 when he was first diagnosed and they actually lost him in an ambulance when he was 2 ....his attacks mostly happen in the middle of the night when he is sick.....as he gets older he has gotten increasingly better....but when he was younger we were at the emergency room monthly when his regular meds couldn't control or bring him out of an attack....he remembers the long nights and days in the emergency room in oxygen tents and getting shots in his legs and knows just how important it is to take his meds to keep his asthma in check....

Olivia (6) has mild asthma and takes her inhaler with no question..but alot of her friends have asthma (including her big brother, Devon) so she never gives it a second thought.

I hope your daughter will continue to take her medicine and hopefully outgrow it as she gets older....
