I would think there was a warranty on the current hard drive.
Whatever happened to quality products and companies standing behind their product.
I certainly expect a laptop to last longer than 18 months.

He isn't hard on his laptop as it stays in his dorm and he is not a gamer, pretty much email, writing papers and of course facebook :)

(was a laptop) Never could get it to connect to the internet at all and even took it to someone who was a pro as well..just wouldn't would not connect. Initially they gave her another one same brand/type etc..it too did the same thing. They refused to give her her money back or do anything else about it. She was out all that money for the puter. 14|2|I have 2 yr old dell--- the problem is either power supply or battery. It kept giving me errors and shutting itself right off. is the pin gets loose quickly on back where you plug it in. She found that out pretty quickly. Just can't get good 'quality' in things any more it seems whether it's a car, computer or even sink faucets. I found out the hard way to never buy any faucets but Moen. They MEAN it when they say "buy it for looks..buy it for LIFE" Anything goes wrong..cartridges go bad in hot/cold water..they replaced and shipped no charge. My sprayer went bad...they replaced at no charge and no shipping charge. In fact, initially I had bought a sprayer at the hardware store myself to try to fix it and Moen rep scolded me and said I should have called them first instead of spending my hard earned money and STILL sent me a new replacement and everything else I needed as well. Moen DEFINATELY has my business from now on! (PS..Delta..wouldn't replace anything. Several years after installation my bathroom (delta) faucet is dripping and I have to go buy new stuff to fix it. *sigh* Shoulda got a Moen but didn't know better then... 16|4|I hear ya! I had a barely 14 month old Dell desktop computer when the hard drive failed and everything went wrong. Of course it was out of warranty. Dell would do nothing! I trashed it since the expense to fix it would have been just about as much a new one. Since then I have heard from a computer geek that Dell out-sources many of their components to China for manufacturing. Hummm....toxic China is still at it! I will never buy another Dell.

I love my computer because my friends live in it. 18|2|WOW, SOUNDS LIKE DELL IS GETTING AS BAD AS COMPAQ/HEWLETT PACKARD...SHEESH, I HAVE 2 AVERATEC LAPTOPS AND A GAGEWAY...HAVE MINOR PROGRAM GILTCH ON ONE OF THE AVERATEC'S, BUT THATS MY FAULT...DAUGHTER IS USING IT RIGHT NOW AND I NEED TO DO A RESTORE ON IT WHEN I GET IT BACK...BUT THE DARNED THING IS STILL RUNNING GREAT EVEN WITH THE ONE ERROR...|JOYHAPPYONE|DAIDOLA5@AOL.COM|20:40:46|03/02/2010|

It's a desktop Dimension but I've had it for about 5 yrs. now, bought directly from Dell. I can honestly say I've had no problems w/it except for maybe 1 or 2 stupid viruses, which of course is no fault of Dell's.
Except for their tech support, Dell used to have an upstanding reputation for having the most reliable & durable computers. It's really a shame if they've gone the way of cheap/substandard quality parts for their machines. :( But rest assured, it'll come back around to bite them in the arse when people stop buying their machines. ;-p

We've had a few warranty issues but some are my own fault. Like my power supply went up but I run my pc 24/7 literally. I do NOT turn off my pc. For the money and the quality Dell is simply the best. Sony you pay for their name, Apple you pay for their name and the software is hard to find, Emachines are crap, HP & Compaq aren't bad but they usually bog their systems down with all kinds of software you don't need, Toshiba you buy the name. I'm not opinionated or anything HAHAHAH Matt sold computers for a living years ago and he saw more returns on Emachines and Packard Bell than anything. HP made the best printers and still does.

Posted on Mar-03-10 at 09:24 AM (Eastern) by 207.190.75.230

All my peripherals are HP (printer, scanner) & I LOVE my HP copy machine. I've had the scanner & the copy machine for at least 10 yrs. w/no problems & have had HP printers pretty much from the start (began w/a 693C that worked fine for years). I had a Canon Bubblejet printer once that came w/a new Gateway computer & it was junk from the get-go - the print head went kaput almost immediately & the ink cartridges were crap (1 color or another always ran out very quickly & they dried up if not used w/in a couple days). What I love about HP printers is that most of their ink cartridges have built-in print heads so you're getting a new print head everytime you replace the ink, thus the reason for their ink being a little pricier. But, the ink also usually lasts for a good long time, & they never dry up. :)

I started out w/an old Packard Bell computer that was built from scratch by a friend's computer savvy son. It was very stable & reliable, & I swear there was nothing you could do to that computer to kill it. LOL

My 2nd computer was a Gateway micro tower that I bought directly from Gateway. I had good luck w/it but have to admit it wasn't the most stable due to Windows ME, & it did not get along w/Norton anti-virus at all. Gateway's tech support tho is very good.

My son had an Emachine bought from Walmart. It was a good computer & likely would've remained so had he been a little more careful about viruses/trojans & what he downloaded/opened. Then he decided he wanted a higher-performing machine so he spent just about all his graduation money last spring & ordered all the parts required to build his own w/the help of a former teacher. A few mos. later he regretted going all out like that cuz of the cost & then too, realizing it was overkill as he really didn't need all that processor speed, etc. That one has no brand name cuz it wasn't a pre-built machine. It's still running as far as I know but he has had some virus/trojan problems w/it also. But he's a teenager.... LOL

I still have all of the above machines here & they all still work, believe it or not, but I had to get a new computer 5 yrs. ago as I started college & needed a reliable & stable machine that could handle all the programs & software I needed for the college classes. So
I got my Dell Dimension & have been very happy w/it. :)

The Gateway & Emachine came pre-installed w/all sorts of junky software & programs we didn't need/would never use, taking up space & memory, so I set to work & uninstalled/removed alot of the crud. I think that was the biggest pain in the rear about those computers. It's like getting the SS coupon flyers & having to sift thru & remove all the advertising crud that's included w/the coupons.

My point is, I think people would have much better luck w/a computer's stability & durability if there wasn't so much junk pre-loaded on them. And for those that do come w/all the junk on it, it's best to have someone knowledgeable w/computers uninstall/remove everything you don't need & aren't going to use. It's mostly "free-trial" crud anyway that you have to eventually pay thru the nose for in order to be able to continue to use it when the free trial period runs out - advertising for companies who want you to buy their product, which you find out AFTER paying for it that it isn't such a great product after all, you really didn't need all that or it doesn't mesh w/your other computer programs/software.

Ok, I'll get off my soapbox now. LOL

My computer is Dell Desktop, not even a year old yet, no problems. I am thinking the problems lies with the Dell laptops that are about a year old or so. I think the quality has gone downhill. My oldest DD had her laptop seven years before she freecycled ( still working) it when she got a new one.
I find it totally ridiculous that my son's and my niece's laptops have failing/failed hard drives.
An almost 18 month computer should NOT be on it's third hard drive.
