When taking the digital temperature by mouth, are you supposed to add a degree?

1|1|No, digital thermometers are already calibrated to take the temperature accurately for their designed method, for example an oral digital thermometer is calibrated for oral temps, but if you were to use it to take a temp under the armpit, then you add a degree. Wanted to add: NEVER use an oral thermometer to take a rectal temp on babies or toddlers...the bulbs are too long and could cause some trauma to the rectal tissue. Also, you wouldnt want to use it rectally, then next time use it orally, you run the risk of contamination even if you thought you cleaned it really well. For rectal temps use a thermometer designed for that, they are red at the opposite end from the bulb, or marked in red somehow (red cap, etc--varies by brand), and the bulb is more rounded and shorter.
