on the one my husband has at work......... it has 4 drums that each hold a different color toner. 1 black 1 yellow 1 blue and 1 red. Perhaps the ones that only need toner are black and white only? Just guessing about that really but hth :)

The ones you just replace the toner have the drum unit built into the toner cartridge. The ones that have individual drum and toner units, the drum is supposed to last longer. But it needs to be replaced periodically just like the toner cartridge. Has nothing to do with color or not.

Dh sold them for a living years ago so I knew he'd know.
