I am a geologist by degree but there isn't much work out there right and I'm only available part time as I have a young son to care for. I want to make some extra money to bridge the gap but I'm not really sure what would be best so here is a list of my none business skills and ideas. Let me know which you like or if you have better ideas I'd love to hear them.

I am a fairly good crafter. I do rug hooking (folk art not latch hook). I make these really awesome hooked Christmas ornaments. I was thinking of putting together ornament hooking kits (pattern, wool, instructions etc) and selling them on Craig's list and Ebay. I can do rugs but they take forever and I'd have to charge a small fortune for them to make any $$. I do stained glass and was thinking about making stained glass window panels (the smaller ones that you hang in your window as a decoration)and selling them locally at a craft show. I live in NH and I thought a pattern that might sell alot of panes is old man in the mountain and a moose or bear. Or maybe even panels showing a dog breed. Other than that I a good cook and can make some pretty good jams and fruit butters once berry season hits. I also knit and spin wool fiber.

Okay feedback and ideas please!

Michelle 1|1|You have many talents! Will you marry me?? lol I don't know what else to suggest other than selling your wares, they are unique and would probably do pretty well if you have enough 'markets' (craigslist, ebay, your own site store, craftshows, etc).....advertise on blogs (you could start a blog to swap banners with other crafters)...oh, and Esty is a crafters selling site that seems to do really good traffic/business :)|saint6811|waylan@comcast.net|17:11:16|02/19/2010|

I have a friend who, for a while, was baking these awesome cakes, like red velvet & boston cream and selling them to local resturants. These cakes would sell for $35-$45 each. She went around with sample slices and price list to various family owned resturants and thats how she got started. She ended up needing more money than that was bringing in and got a job, but she always said she really enjoyed doing the baking and she could do it early in the morning and when her little one was sleeping.

A friend works for a company called LIVEOPS. they are very definitely on the up and up--you have to pay for your background/credit check and that is it. LIVEOPS is probably the premier company in the US for work at home. They have several disabled operators, single parents, retired people and from any other situation you could imagine. it is a great company to work for. you need good computer, quiet office space as you will be taking phone calls. Most of the lines are dedicated to infomercials, however, they do have other lines. some of the calls are outbound but are generated from calls where people have already called in to purchase products, so there is no cold calling telemarketing. the company also does overflow pizza hut calls, some customer service related calls, etc. They are in the middle of handling calls for the haitian crisis at the present and it has been a humbling experience to say the least. They did calls for the telethon a few weeks ago and also exclusively handled the calls for the Larry King show on Haiti. they also have an insurance line for licensed insurance agents.

Another good place to check out work at home is ratracerebellion. they have some good companies. It is for work at home moms and a workplace forum. A couple of other companies to check out are VIPDESK CONNECT, ARISE, and WEST AT HOME. Hope this helps....

Sounds crazy but it does happen

Know anyone with a commercial kitchen? Maybe you can rent it or barter for the use of it.

I know a small family business (apple orchard) that rents out it's kitchen to folks with food sanitation certificates. No certificate? Then someone from the family stays in the kitchen while you work just to make sure it's all on the up and up. As a geologist, you've probably written many papers. Why not turn to freelance writing? I write at Associated Content, but there are lots of other places you could write... Demand Studios, Bright Hub, Ehow...

You can also blog for pay too - start a blog, toss up Adsense, build readership (and have your blog be at least 3 months old) and then sign up at places that pay you to blog about them.
