Hotel chain offers human bed warmers
A hotel chain is employing human bed warmers to help guests get a good night's sleep

Published: 7:30AM GMT 18 Jan 2010

The walking electric blankets are dressed in special all-in-one sleeper suits and are sent to warm the beds of guests staying at the Holiday Inn before they get under the covers.

Dr Chris Idzikowski, director of the Edinburgh Sleep Centre, said the idea could help people get off to sleep. He said: ''There's plenty of scientific evidence to show that sleep starts at the beginning of the night when body temperature starts to drop. The decline occurs partly because the blood vessels of the hands, face and feet open up and release heat.

''A warm bed – approximately 20 to 24 degrees Celsius – is a good way to start this process whereas a cold bed would inhibit sleep. Holiday Inn's new bed warmers service should help people achieve a good night's sleep especially as it's taking much longer for them to warm up when they come in from the snow.''

Holiday Inn spokeswoman Jane Bednall said the idea was ''like having a giant hot water bottle in your bed''. The five minute free bed warming sessions are being tried out in London and Manchester at the end of January.

OMG! Those wacky English! I'd like to discuss with the good British folk just how this would work. Do these human bed warmers get into bed while you are in the shower perhaps? Do you leave the room then come back once the bed is warmed? Is this something a guest requests?

Oh, and would we Americans WANT a stranger in our beds before we get into them? Personally, I think not. It's hard enough just thinking about whether the sheets are clean from the last guest stay (hopefully the sheets were changed). Now, will we have to worry about random strangers (hotel employees) lying in our beds before we do? What if they have flatulance while they are there...would that make the sheets stink? Would you enjoy sleeping on pillows that were breathed on by strangers? Isn't there a rise in the incidents of bedbugs in hotels nowadays? Ewww.....
1|1|LOL, well it was the English who brought us Monty Python....in fact, doesnt this sound like it would be a MP skit?? LOL!|saint6811|waylan@comcast.net|19:30:26|01/26/2010|

Drink bodyguards at the bars?
Someone who is paid to stick their little toe into the swimming pool before the rest of us jump in?

And I can't help but wonder how someone is chosen to work as a bed warmer? Do they choose larger, warmer people? Are they schooled in the manners of such a thing? This story just raises more questions than answers for me! 4|2|I bet they will be looking for|angNC|memawang@embarqmail.com|00:16:19|01/27/2010|

Rest assured, if I were to have to stay in a hotel anywhere, I'd be bringing my own air mattress & my own set of sheets/pillows, etc. Call me anal but I cannot deal w/a bed that has likely "hosted" thousands of other people & things. Ish! :(

Just think about how many people sit their butts on the bedspreads in hotel rooms. And, they do much more than sit on those bedspreads too; yet, they hardly get washed and replaced on the beds. Perhaps clean sheets underneath, but the bedspreads are large petri dishes....ewww!

But to be honest, I'd prefer to just sleep in my car or stay home, period, & not even use a hotel room. Between the beds & the bathrooms, not worth the risk of nightmares. LOL
Except for an occasional overnighter at my parents', I haven't spent the night away from my own home in over 20 yrs. (& then it was at a friend's). Have only stayed INSIDE a hotel/motel once in my life & that was when I was about 12 yrs. old (didn't know any better then. LOL) & thru an outing w/my church's youthgroup. I DID in fact once sleep in the car OUTSIDE a hotel/motel while everyone else slept in the room. Got a stiff neck/back out of the deal but it was the lesser of the 2 evils. LOLOL

ETA: That the one time I slept in the car outside the hotel, we all found out the next day there had evidently been a fight right outside the door of the room (where my friends were sleeping & where I was in the car) during the night & someone had gotten stabbed. :( The car doors were locked, sure, but I also thank God I was buried under the blankets in the backseat, where I didn't see/hear a thing & noone could see me! LOL

at any rate....I'll still be bringing my lysol spray to every hotel I go to as I usually do (yes, I admit,,,I'm a bit neurotic when it comes to sleeping in hotels, no matter how nice they are) When I have to travel for work, I bring my own sheets, a can of lysol, and I also lock my toothbrush in the safe box in a plastic baggy because I have this strange fear that someone will dip it in the toilet or heaven knows where else if I'm not in my room....I know completely neurotic, but I can't help myself.

My dh HATES traveling with me because he says he doesn't understand why I do this..and I just can't seem to get him to understand that it's a simple fear of mine and no matter how hard I've tried I can't overcome it....

18|5|I was all ALONE in that car, w/just my pillow, blanky & steel fingernail file..... LOLOL|maraj|maraj64@hotmail.com|20:34:29|01/27/2010|

But, there were actually prostitutes & docked sailors that I'm sure used a few of the rooms in that hotel (Flamingo Inn) as it was right on Lake Michigan. :-O
We were there to go to Great America that next day but I said never again cuz all those new "experiences" scared the beejeebies out of me! LOL
The Eagle & Loop the Loop roller coasters did loosen up my stiff neck & back tho. LOLOL
