really annoying to see women smoking and pregnant. worked in OB for 10 years and it still bugs me to see the babies "jittery" and withdrawing from the nicotine, small birth weight, and the mom saying she didnt know!! that is usually the kicker!! 2|2|my sister in law smoked through all four of her pregnancies, even after she almost lost her first son to SID's. they had to have special equipment put in the crib, for when he stopped breathing in the middle of the night, so theycould wake up and revive him. After going through that, I am not sure how one could put a cigarette in their mouth, for three more pregnancies. Just irresponsible!!! I've never smoked but I do know it's an addiction and habit. I am sure I have habits that aren't the best for my children... don't we all? My mom had five kids and has smoked since her late teens. She stopped smoking every time she was pregnant then would start again after she had us.
Edited to add to my rant:
For example some people walk around with 2yr old+ kids with pacifiers in their mouth. It drives me batty. They are ruining their kid's teeth. There are people who have obese children cause they feed them nothing but junk. Who I am to say ... maybe that's all they can afford? May they know no better themselves...

My rant is about giving soda (Pepsi/Coke) in the baby bottle and let the little ones (under 2) suck on that and put themselves to sleep with it. I knew someone who did that, believe it or not. I'm glad they moved and I didn't have to see the kid's poor rotten teeth.

The reason I say this is because when a person quits smoking it takes 1 - 2 YEARS for the toxins to completely leave the person's body and thus it is not always "safer" for the baby for the mother to quit smoking completely and I was one of them........... Being as I had smoked for 16 years when I got pregnant I was advised to go from smoking 12 - 20 cigs a day down to 10 and then down to 8 and so on so that my body wouldn't be letting all of the toxins I had built up "go" as they would be released into the very system that the baby was utilizing to grow. By the time I actually gave birth I was down to 6 cigs a day and Pj is fine. I'm not condoning smoking while pregnant I am simply saying that unless you've talked to the woman's Dr yourself don't be so sure that they were told to stop, because they may NOT have been.

the truth is, any habit is hard to break but when you know it will affect the baby, it is a no brainer. It is true, if you are a heavy smoker you need to decrease the amount of nicotine over time, nut the patch works great for this. you may not see the immediate side effects of smoking but the long term effects are there. there are so many risks that may show up later in life, SIDS, Asthma, increased risk for smoking , low birth weight, immature lung development, etc..
a baby on a vent or at risk for RSV (respiratory virus) does not need a parent or grandparent coming into the NICU holding or touching the child. Where is the lysol !!!
and....the nurse does not need to get so nauseous from the smell of the smoke or headaches.

He wasn't happy about it but I would not consent to having a child until he quit. I've never smoked and I was not going to have my child made ill by second hand smoke from his father.
It makes me sick to see people doing lots of things with their kids around.....not just smoking...like getting drunk or using foul langauge or treating other people with disrespect. What really gets me is when a spouse totally treats their partner like crap with their kids watching. Kids learn about relationships by watching their parents, especially boys learning how to treat women from watching their dads. All I can say is from what I've seen there are going to be some really dysfunctional guys available for our young girls. 19|1|I'm not proud to say I am a smoker.....have been since I was 18.....but, I did two things after I peed on that stick and it read positive: The first was to throw my cigs in the trash....the second thing I did was call for my first prenatal exam because I was worried about having smoked for the first 3 weeks of my pregnancy unknown to me that I was pregnant. My dr. ENCOURAGES people to stop smoking but he doesn't judge, badger or nag. At one time, he was a 2-pack a day smoker & he'll be the 1st to openly admit that stopping smoking is not an easy thing to do & what works for one doesn't necessarily work for another. But, DON'T beat yourself up over it. ;)
Being supportive, giving positive re-inforcement & encouragement goes alot further w/a smoker trying to stop than nagging, badgering & bad-mouthing.
We live in the Land of the Free only because of the Brave!

some people are over eaters addicted to food, some are shop a holics always need to go shopping, some people are drinkers. No one is perfect everyone has flaws...I think we should show compassion for whatever peoples addiction is...try to understand it and offer support and root for them when they are trying to change...it is not easy, and it is not for me to judge anyone as I have my own flaws to bear..
*fortunately for me, my family is being very supportive, my bf does not smoke in the house, or around me so that helps a lot...my son has been supplying my candy jar with hard candy and keeping it filled..these are loving ways, no hounding me or nagging me...but gently guiding me and supporting me.
I started smoking when I hit 30 years old, a bad time in my life...so no I didn't smoke with my son, but I am not gonna throw stones at anyone that does/did...I don't think it is my place to judge them, everyone has to deal with their actions/choices on there own..

They always cracked the windows in the car and never smoked upstairs but I had soo many health problems growing up, mostly upper resp. issues and I even had asthma. Then Christmas '93 my Dad got very sick and in Jan we found out he had cancer. He quit cold turkey (not like he had a choice, really) but my mom continued to smoke, even tho she went outside, the smell was enough to make Dad sick. Recently she more or less quit (one every once in a while). A few years back my Dad and I were talking and out of the blue he apologized for the years of smoking, said he didnt realize the harm it was doing to us kids. Now there is no smoking in my house, or in my vehicle. I have few upper resp issues and my asthma is gone (except in extreme conditions). Ive seen people who just dont care what it does to others, including their kids, and I see those that are clueless and I see those who want to quit and cant. Its understandable, I guess. As a never smoker, I cant say I know what its like for you.
Oh ~ as for the pacifier thing. My DD would not give hers up until she was like 3. When she was still a baby/toddler (1-2) she would "lose" them and then at night couldnt fall asleep without it and would cry all night. So the next day we would go buy another. When it was time for her to stop, we would throw out the "passy" and within an hour she would have another in her mouth. This went on for a couple of weeks before I started finding her stash's. LOL Finally, I found the last one, threw it out and told her the goats ate it (her grandparents have them) and from then on it was no problem. lol
