20 0|0|OMG!!! How do our senior citizens do it??????????????????|RebekkaVA|queen_vulture@msn.com|15:34:19|01/18/2010|

Well my husband finally qualifies for Medicare (I never thought he'd be on medicare at age 40) anyways it's so confusing trying to pick providers etc, even though Part A and B pay for things, you still have to pay huge amounts for all sorts of medical things and prescriptions, wow those prescription plans are crazy, how do people afford them, we are probably gonna pick Humana, they seem to have the best co pays and things right now, although still a bit expensive, at least it's some coverage right? I can't see how senior citizens survive having to buy their medicines etc. My mom has to pay for 3 insurances to help keep her medical expenses down. It's crazy. Sorry had to vent. I know I should be grateful and I am, but at the same time, it's stressful too. Hugs, Rebekka

1|1|Rebekka, my elderly mother (she'll be 85 in March) worked full time until she was 77 just to keep her employer insurance....she was afraid to retire as it would make her what she calls "insurance poor"....a good chunk of her pension (smallish pension, nothing spectacular) and a part of her SS goes towards her Medicare supplemental insurance and medication expenses not covered by Part D. She does get Circuit Breakers assistance with her meds after she has a 'spend down', usually kicks in around March each year.|saint6811|waylan@comcast.net|16:00:21|01/18/2010|

had a $300 deductable but will hit that hole way to soon She also pays about $300 a month for the supplement insurance 6|4|Only one of his meds is generic, so I would just pay the out of pocket for it, I'm thinking when he finally (YAY) gets to see a dr. next month, they can maybe prescribe meds that are all generic. At least I hope so anyways. His Advair is the most expensive :(|RebekkaVA|queen_vulture@msn.com|16:41:01|01/18/2010|

My mom has Medicare w/Sr. Preferred as a supplement for med. coverage & SeniorCare for prescription assistance. Both have been a huge help but we found out today that effective Jan. 1st, it no longer covers chiropractic adjustments unless there's an injury - no more maintenance adjustments. :( The chiropractor we have has been a Godsend for my mom, helping avoid potential surgery, pain pills, dr. visits, antibiotics (for sinus infections), etc.
Guess "preventative care" isn't a priority anymore. :(

the ones i get thru ppa............his bloodpressure med......has no generic as of yet.........and he pays $209 for a months supply.......also has 5 different

eye drops.......some are over $150 per bottle......

if my mom had not saved ...before she passed away......he wouldnt even be able to pay bills, groceries, and buy meds...so i sure see how some elderly have to choose.....between ..food or meds

maybe some of you...that are paying for your own meds........could fill out an application thru PPA and get some of them free.......or low cost 13|5|One trick to save on medications....if your med dosage comes in a double dose form, ask your doctor to write a Rx for the double dose (for example if you take Lasix 20mg, ask for 40mg Rx), then cut the tabs in half (get a pill splitter for accurate dosing!!), get twice the number of doses for the same money. I would not recommend this for the very elderly, as they may be more likely to forget to split the tabs and would not be taking the dosage prescribed. |saint6811|waylan@comcast.net|21:25:39|01/18/2010|

Edited to add: This only works for scored tablets....capsules, or un-scored tablets will not give the accurate dosing if you try to 'half' them.

an elderly man picking up his new prescriptions when the pharmacist said it would be 148.05 he put the bag down and said just keep it and walked away.he walked away saying i cant afford that.he even asked her if they had generic form and there was none.made me feel bad because i was picking up my childs $3.00 prescription that w/o insurance i myself could not afford.i know i could not afford 148.05 a month in prescriptions.i do feel like we get overcharged sometimes one time the pharmacy wanted to charge me $3.00 after insurance for alcohol preps for 100 ct. box but over on the shelf in medicine isle they were 100ct. boxes for $1.00. 16|2|I guess my dad (85) is very lucky|crenchen|crenchen@aol.com|08:02:08|01/19/2010|

he has Anthem Senior that he got through his insurance guy. He pays $50 for the emergency room, $100 for hospital stay and he has about 8 perscriptions a month that cost anywhere from $3.80 to $10. So he is very lucky. 17|3|But what happens to the union policies and the other ones that we think are "for life" if this debaucle gets voted through?|whitmarg|robin@whitmannet.com|09:45:01|01/19/2010|
