If a young adult has a very limited education and wants to begin school - starting with the basics, what would they do? Are there schools for adults that pretty much start them from scratch like kids do? Or would they need to hire a tutor? Any information on this subject would really help.

I'm trying to help a friend who wants to help the family of a 20-year old whose mother began homeschooling her when she was small but the mother died when the child was still elementary school age. She's been shifted around from relative to relative and never got the schooling she needed. It seems they didn't mind caring for her for a while since the money was not a problem but she never stayed in one place long enough to get any significant schooling. Now, she wants desperately to get an education but doesn't know where to turn. Thanks in advance for any help.

* Sylvan Learning Center or something similar could probably do an assessment of what she knows.
* Local community college.
* The Feds provide funding for adult ed and literacy that is administered at the State level. Check with your local community college. http://wdcrobcolp01.ed.gov/Programs/EROD/org_list.cfm?category_cd=DAE
