When Equal first came out, I fell in love with it. At the time, didn't know the dangers. Then switched to Splenda for a while. I was gaining weight and also was always hungry. Finally did some research and was stunned aspartame was a chemical poison! I stopped cold turkey. I've been using Stevia sweetener (from leaves of Stevia plant) since. Sharon:)

Glad I've never been a diet soda drinker but there's another not-so-good ingredient lurking in regular sodas - benzoate, as in sodium benzoate. It's in pretty much EVERY type of soda except 7-Up. Now, I've never been one to fall for alot of this type of "hype" & have been a long-time 7-Up drinker anyway (it's just my personal preference), but this aspertame & benzoate stuff doesn't sit well w/me.
I have a cousin w/MS who drank only diet sodas. Once she found out about aspertame, she quit drinking diet soda & her symptoms have actually improved some.
And I have a friend who's 14 yr. old son passed away 2 yrs. ago from acute myeloid leukemia (one of the risks associated w/benzoate). His drs./specialists were not only concerned w/the location of a nuclear power plant being just 30 mi. away but his consumption of sodas containing sodium benzoate. He didn't consume large amounts of it but the drs. feared that it could have easily contributed to the type of leukemia he had - the risks of cancer may have already been present but add to it the nuclear power plant w/the benzoate to boot, & the end result wasn't good.
I've also seen several lawsuits being posted in newspapers & on tv about the risks of associated w/benzoate. No, this stuff doesn't sit well w/me. :(
